Top 10 Ratings

Last Update: November 2024 – comparisons are to Ratings at the end of 2023

The Professional Triathletes Organisation release World Rankings on a weekly basis. These used to be based on my race analysis, creating a strong overlap of their Rankings to my Ratings. Since the start of 2023, the PTO Worlds Rankings are now based on a new points algorithm (details can be found here), putting a stronger emphasis on the prestige or tier of a race and the finishing position and looking at all races longer then Olympic Distance in the last 12 months. The Ratings shown in this post are only based on full-distance races (i.e. not half-distance races such as 70.3 or T100) regardless of where the performance is shown. While the PTO Rankings are based on the last 12 months, my Rankings are based on all races an athlete has raced, with an emphasis on more recent races, but requiring at least three finishes, at least one of them in the last 12 months. Therefore, these Rankings offer a more complete picture of full-distance racing.

Comments:

• With his win in Kona, Patrick Lange climbs to #1 in the Ratings. He’s also the athlete with the most Ironman-distance finishes in the Top 10.
• With Gregory Barnaby (new #3) and Antonio Benito Lopez (#10) there are two athletes who didn’t yet have three finishes at the end of last year and therefore no valid Rating. In addition, Kristian Blummenfelt now has finished two IMs in the last twelve months and re-enters the Ratings.
• With his fifth place in Kona, Menno Koolhaas has climbed from #16 a year ago into the Top 10. 
• The old #2, Sam Laidlow has dropped to #13. Arthur Horseau (now #27), Daniel Baekkegard (now #23) and Braden Currie (now #19) have also fallen out of the Top 10.
• All of the Top10 athlete have actually raced in Kona!

Comments:

• Compared to the start of the year, there was a lot of up and down in the Top 10. The new #1 rated female is Laura Philipp after her spectacular win in Nice.
• Kat Matthews is the only other athlete to climb a few positions in the Top 10, after wins in Texas, Vitoria and a second place in Nice she is now rated #3.
• With Jackie Hering, there is a new athlete in the Top 10 after her return to full-distance racing with a win at IM Hamburg.
• The only athlete to fall out of the Top10 compared to end of 2023 is last year’s #10 Fenella Langridge, she is now #15.
