Course Conditions
After this year’s race, there is only one “older” course record that hasn’t been broken. Partly, this has to do with a better field than in recent years (SoF of 85.8 for the men and 81.75 for the women, compared to 68.35 and 72.48 in the two previous years which were single-gender), and partly due to good conditions, about four minutes quicker than the average from recent years. On the men’s side, we have a new swim course record (Richard Varga – finishing his first Ironman after two DNFs), bike course record (3:54:33 by Robert Kallin – the fastest bike split in an Ironman) run course record (by race winner Antonio Benito Lopez) and an overall course record (by Antonio Benito Lopez, also setting a new Spanish record). For the women, there’s a new swim course record (by Stephanie Clutterbuck), bike course record (by Ruth Astle) and overall record (by Kat Matthews).
Nice and Kona Qualifying
Vitoria offered three slots for the women (Nice) and three for the men (Kona). These will be offered to:
- Ruth Astle, Simone Mitchell and Katharina Wolf
and - Antonio Benito Lopez, David McNamee and Bradley Weiss.
You can find he full list of qualifiers on this page.
The “other” Kona story is the DQ of Sam Laidlow who was looking to validate his AQ slot. If that DQ is not overturned, there doesn’t seem to be any other race for Sam as the startlists for the the remaining qualifiers, Lake Placid and Frankfurt, are already closed.
Update July 16th: Ironman have decided that Sam’s race in Vitoria was sufficient for a validation of his AQ slot. After receiving the penalty, he didn’t stop in a penalty tent but continued to race, eventually crossing the finish line in second place. He was promptly DQ’d, appealed the decision but the panel upheld the DQ. There is a lot of discussion whether someone who was DQ’d can be considered to have “competitively raced and finished”. To me, the main logic of validation is creating an “even playing field”, forcing everyone to race in the year before Kona and making everyone similarly “tired”. In that respect, I can accept granting Sam validation, but of course it stretches Ironman’s own rules to the breaking point.
