Ironman Hawaii 2013 – Analyzing Results

I’ve had a lot of fun following the Kona race through Twitter and updating my “Live Predictions” at kona.trirating.com. (It’s still up with the final results, so you can sort and analyze the results.) Rather than recount the exciting races (other sites will do a much better job than I can), I’ve decided to offer some additional insight by quickly doing my usual race analysis, noting where athletes went quicker (green) or slower (red) than expected by their previous results. For some fun, I’ve done a twitter roundup of the women’s race and the men’s race.

Race Conditions

The conditions in Kona were relatively fast. Kona has a course rating of -4:51, with the adjustments floating between -2 and -12 minutes. This year, the adjustment was 00:36, more than 10 minutes quicker as last year and even a bit faster than in 2011 when the it took course records to win both the men’s and women’s races.
