KPR points and Prize Money

IM Wales is a P-2000 race. It has a total prize purse of 40.000 US$.

Male Race Participants

The strength of the field is 11% of a typical Kona field.

A couple of the participants are questionable to race in Tenby as they have qualified for Kona (Cam Wurf, Harry Wiltshire, potentially Chris McDonald) and are likely to adjust their plans.

Ironman Mont Tremblant 2017 – Analyzing Results

IMMtT_LogoCourse Conditions

Mont Tremblant is a challenging course: Even if the conditions this year were better than the torrential rains we’ve had last year, the adjustment of 3:45 indicates that this is one of the slower courses on the Ironman calendar.

Male Race Results

Marino Vanhoenacker put on a clinic: He was just a few seconds behind in the swim then posted the fastest times in the bike and run and won his 17th Ironman by twenty minutes! (By his words he won “only” 16 – he doesn’t count the abbreviated IM New Zealand 2012.) He secured a Kona slot but probably will decline it. His slot would roll down to Chris McDonald. Chris was solid all day – just 30 seconds behind Marino after the swim, then loosing time to him on the bike but gapping the rest of the field. A hard earned 3:04 marathon saw him finish second. Third place went to Jordan Monnink in his first Professional Ironman race, moving up from racing on the 70.3 distance.

Female Race Results

The female Pro field in Mont Tremblant was larger than the male, had more potential Kona qualifiers and was also a lot more exciting. The first two legs were clearly dominated by Lauren Brandon: Not only was she the first female out of the water, she was also the first overall out of the water, making up the three minutes that the male Pros started before the females! Lauren also posted the fastest bike split. By T2 she had built a lead of more than 13 minutes in front of Rachel Joyce and Magali Tisseyre who were looking for the the points to qualify for Kona. Two more females – Kim Schwabenbauer and Jennie Hansen – were 18 and almost 20 minutes back at the start of the marathon. 25k into the run, the order hadn’t changed – Lauren was still in the lead, but Rachel was just 30 seconds back and the other three ladies were within four minutes of the lead.

The last part of the run created a major re-shuffle: In the end Rachel Joyce won her second Ironman race of the season – and finishing her third IM within ten weeks was finally enough for her to secure a Kona slot. With Kim Schwabenbauer another recent mom had the fastest marathon and finished in second place. The final spot on the podium was claimed by Jennie Hansen who managed to end her three-year injury break with a great return to Ironman racing.

Ironman Copenhagen 2017 – Analyzing Results

IMCph_LogoRace Conditions

As is typical for Copenhagen, the bike course was pretty fast (adjustment of 15:59), also leading to quick overall times – Michelle Vesterby just missed going sub-9. With a course rating of 20:11 Copenhagen continues to be one of the quickest courses on the calendar.

Female Race Results

Michelle Vesterby was leading the race from wire to wire: She posted the fastest swim and bike legs, having a lead of nearly 15 minutes in T2. As Kona is already on the horizon, she probably didn’t push all that hard on the run, still winning by eight minutes. Second place went to Corinne Abraham who also had a good, sub-5 bike ride. She posted the fastest marathon of the day but couldn’t challenge Michelle for the leading position. After loosing her 2016 season with injuries she suffered from being attacked during one of her training runs, Sofie Goos had a satisfying third place finish.

Unofficial KPR & 2017 Kona Pro Slot Allocation for August Cutoff

2017 TitlePage Kona Report ThumbHere is my calculation of the KPR at the end of August, deciding the final 10 male and 7 female slots (in addition to the July slots). You’ll always find all Kona Pros in my “Always Up-to-date Kona 2017 Startlist“.

My results are unofficial, the official results will be posted on the Ironman website at http://eu.ironman.com/triathlon/triathlon-rankings/points-system.aspx (but as far as I can tell will show the same data).

There is still going to be some time before all slots have been accepted or maybe rolled down to the next athletes. Athletes with rankings shown in brackets (such as “(11)”) are out of the slot positions and have to hope for a rolldown slot. For now there is some speculation whether Marino Vanhoenacker and Chris McDonald would accept their slots.

Once the field has been finalized, I will work on this year’s version of the Kona Rating Report, looking at the field and each athlete’s chances for a good result. The free report will be released in time before the Kona race, you can already pre-order your copy.

Update Aug 22nd: All Top 10 males except for Marino have accepted their slots.

Update Aug 26th: Marino has declined his slot, and Chris McDonald accepted the rolldown. This means that all August slots have been decided.

Female KPR Rankings

Rank Athlete Points
1 Joyce, Rachel 5.880
2 Moeller, Kristin 5.120
3 McCauley, Jocelyn 4.415
4 Holst, Tine 4.295
Decl Kessler, Meredith 4.265
5 Chura, Haley 4.180
6 Bartlett, Nikki 4.055
7 Collonge, Jeanne 3.910
(8) Wutti, Eva 3.820
(9) Mack, Danielle 3.820

Nominally, Meredith Kessler would receive a slot but she’s pregnant and so is extremely likely to decline. I assume she will still be asked (and the rolldown procedure to take a while), but Jeanne Collonge should receive a rolldown slot. (Update Aug 21st: Jeanne has posted on her Facebook page that she has received an invitation.) In case more slots roll down, Eva Wutti would be the next in line, she has the better tie-breaking score than Danielle Mack who has the same number of points.

Update Aug 22nd: All slots on the female side have settled. As expected Meredith declined, and all slots (including Jeanne’s) have been accepted.

Ironman Sweden 2017 – Analyzing Results

IMSweden_LogoRace Conditions

Conditions in Sweden sounded decent – not too hot or cold, but probably a bit too windy for really fast times. After a new swim course record (Clemente Alonso’s 47:29 was faster than Andy Boecherer’s time from 2012 by more than a minute) Cameron Wurf posted a new bike course – he improved on the 2012 time (when the bike course was likely a bit short) by KJ Danielsson by more than 10 minutes! Clemente’s 8:07 was the second fastest ever in Sweden (after Jan Raphael’s 2012 winning time on what was a different – and likely shorter – course).

Male Race Results

Clemente Alonso was first out of the water, but it took Cameron Wurf only 60k to make up his three minute difference after the swim. Cam then continued to ride faster than everyone else, posted a new bike course record and entered T2 with an eight minute gap to Clemente and Swedish hopeful KJ Danielsson. Cam ran an even marathon pace, but Clemente was slowly eating into his lead. By 30k Clemente surged past Cam, but was never quite able to clearly gap him. Clemente won his first IM since IM Barcelona in 2014 (and a long time dealing with injuries) in front of Cam who was just over a minute behind at the finish. Third place went to Esben Hovgaard who overtook KJ in the last 4k of the run.

Kona Qualifying Implications

As Sweden is one of the last races before the August cutoff, a few Kona Qualifying decisions have been determined:

  • Cameron Wurf finished second, exactly the minimum result he needed to be secure for a Kona slot. Congratulations!
  • Giulio Molinari and Denis Chevrot were on the start list but decided not to race, but even without adding points this weekend they are also safe for a slot.
  • Esben Hovgaard and Daniil Sapunov were also in the running for a slot, but they finished one rank behind what they would have needed to make it into the bubble. They are now 14th and 17th in the August KPR (before IM Mont Tremblant), so don’t have a chance for a slot without a massive number of rolldowns.
