Kona Qualifying

Michelle Vesterby, Celine Schwerer and also very likely Corinne Abraham have already qualified in July. But there are a few others that can still qualify in August with a good result in Copenhagen:

  • Kristin Moeller should be okay with a fifth place finish, she has also registered for a number of other races.
  • Jeanne Collonge needs at least a podium finish to improve her total.
  • Pamela Tastets and Darbi Roberts will need at least a second place to have a reasonable chance for an August slot.

IM Sweden is a P-2000 race. It is an MPRO-only race and has a total prize purse of 40.000 US$.

Male Race Participants

The strength of the field is 12% of a typical Kona field.

There is a number of athletes that probably planned to do IM Sweden in case they missed qualifying (such as Thiago Vinhal, David Plese, Mark Duelsen or Daniel Fontana). As indicated by the “*” a lot of athletes have also registered for other Ironman races a week before or even on the same weekend. It is quite likely that there will be some changes before race day.

Kona Qualifying

There are a few athletes that still have a chance to qualify for Kona with a good result in Sweden:

  • Giulio Molinari, Denis Chevrot and Harry Wiltshire already have a good number of points, a fifth place or better should be enough for them to get an August slot.
  • Daniil Sapunov, Michael Weiss, Cameron Wurf, Markus Fachbach, Justin Daerr and Nick Baldwin need at least a podium, probably even a second place.

Among the field, Thiago Vinhal, David Plese, Marc Duelsen and Daniel Fontana have already qualified in July.

Ironman Canada 2017 (Whistler) – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

The times at IM Canada have been quite slow this year: Apart from 2015 when unexpected, cold rain impacted a lot of the Pros, the conditions were the slowest in Whistler so far. Nonetheless the positioning of the race (it was the last race before the first Kona cutoff) led to a strong field and a number of new course records. The top three bike times were faster than the 2013 record by Uli Brömme (5:13),  the new record is Rachel McBride’s 5:06:41. While Uli still holds the run course record (3:06) she also lost the overall record (was 9:28). Again, the top three finishers were able to break her time, Linsey Corbin holds the new course record with her time of 9:17:12.

Female Race Results

The first two legs were dominated by Rachel McBride who posted both the fastest swim and bike times. In T2 she was leading by almost seven minutes. But then the faster runners showed their strengths: Linsey Corbin ran the day’s fastest marathon (3:08) and took the lead shortly before the half marathon mark. Linsey eventually won by more than seven minutes over Jen Annett who outran Rachel by eleven minutes. Rachel nonetheless had a solid day and was happy to hang on for third place.

Rachel Joyce needed a third place for a secure Kona slot, she was struggling a bit all day (probably not yet fully recovered from her win at IM Whistler less than two months ago) and couldn’t close the gap to the podium. Rachel finished fourth and has to hope for a number of rolldowns if she wants to make it to Kona.

Linsey was already safe for Kona before the race – she has gained some confidence for October. Rachel and the other potential Kona qualifiers Danielle Mack and Leslie Miller couldn’t score enough points to climb into the Top 28 points slots, so a bit surprisingly no additional Canada racers were able to grab a slot.

Ironman Switzerland 2017 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

Conditions in Zürich were very similar to previous years, all legs were pretty close to the course ratings. Some athletes posted quick times in the individual legs (Celine was just 22 seconds off her swim course record, Cameron within five minutes off the bike course record) and overall records (Nick ended up just 48 seconds slower than Ronnie in 2010, the second fastest time ever in Zürich), but no new records were set this year.

Nick Kastelein had a great race in Zürich: He posted the second fastest times on the swim, bike an run, resulting in the second fastest time ever at IM Zürich and convincing win. Cameron Wurf seemed to be intent to close the small gap to him after the swim, but never managed to catch up to him. He still had a lead of one minutes into T2 and then quickly built that to seven minutes at the finish. Second place went to Ruedi Wild who had the fastest marathon of the day. Jan Van Berkel ran a smart race: He was in close proximity to 9-time-winner Ronnie Schildknecht for most of the bike, and secured third place with a solid sub-3 marathon when Ronnie had to DNF with a strained muscle. With Samuel Huerzeler another Swiss finished in fourth, while Daniel Fontana climbed from 8th in T2 into fifth at the finish, securing a Kona slot. Daniil Sapunov in sixth and Cameron Wurf in seventh place missed the second place they would have needed for a Kona slot.
