Always Up-to-date Kona 2019 Startlist

NewImageHere is the start list for Kona 2019. I will update when athletes withdraw from the race.

For details about Pro qualifying and where each athlete qualified, check out the “Kona 2019 Qualifying” page.

I provide a lot more details on the race and the participants in my free “Kona Rating Report” – you can order the Report here or by clicking “Get Kona Report” in the sidebar on the right.

Updates

  • On October 6th, Terenzo Bozzone withdrew from the race (see his Instagram post), citing an Achilles injury that is on the mend but just not good enough to be competitive on the run.
  • On September 26th, Skye Moench posted on Instagram that she’s been in a bike crash. Her injuries (among others a concussion, shattered elbow, and broken clavicle) won’t allow her to race in Kona this year.
  • On September 17th, Kyle Buckingham announced on Instagram that because of visa problems he won’t be able to race Kona. He has instead switched his focus to IM Italy and IM Barcelona.
  • In early July, Frederik van Lierde announced that he will not race Kona but is instead going to focus on 70.3 Worlds in Nice in early September and then IM Barcelona in October.

To the athletes with an injury, fingers crossed for a speedy and full recovery!

Injury List

Not all Kona preps are going according to plan, and some athletes are open about the problems they are facing in getting ready for Kona:

  • Mirinda Carfrae and Tim O’Donnell posted an update on their YouTube channel. The title of the episode says it all: “I broke my elbow and Tim hurt his foot“. Both are still planning to race Kona, even if Rinny thinks her swim will suffer.

Ironman Lake Placid 2019 – Analyzing Results

IMLakePlacidThis is a preliminary analysis that will be updated once I have the full results and splits.

Course Conditions

IM Lake Placid is a pretty slow course and this year it was probably even harder. An adjustment of -20:33 is the slowest we have ever seen on this course. This was mainly due to an extremely slow run, the run adjustment of -10:09 is reflected by the fastest run that was only 2:56:30 by Joe Gambles. The performance of the day was Matt Russell’s 4:27:27 bike split: It was more than ten minutes quicker than any other finisher’s bike split and broke one of the longest standing course records, Steve Larson’s 4:33 from 2001.

Kona Qualifying

IM Lake Placid 2019 has two Kona slots, these go to

  • Joe Gambles
    and
  • Mark Duelsen.

(Winner Matt Russell already secured his Kona slot at IM Frankfurt.)

Official slot allocation (and a rolldown in case one of those two declines his slot) will be on Monday.

Ironman Hamburg 2019 – Analyzing Results

IMHH_LogoCourse Conditions

Another set of course changes (different swim layout compared to 2017, another new bike course and a slightly tweaked run course) makes it hard to compare this year’s results to other IM Hamburg data and determine course records. The non-wetsuit swim was quite slow and the bike course was made relatively hard with side winds, helping to break apart larger groups in the second loop. After last year’s fast marathon times the run course was lengthened and maybe a bit long this year, resulting in slow run times.

All of this and the high temperatures contributed to a high DNF rate – only half of the 26 MPROs who started the race were able to finish.

Kona Qualifying

IM Hamburg had one slot each for the men and women. They go to

  • Kristian Hoegenhaug
    and
  • Martina Kunz.

The slot rolled down quite far on the female side: Susie Cheetham (winner), Sarah Piampiao (second) and Caroline Steffen (fourth) were already qualified, and third-place finisher Julia Gajer declined her slot.

Male Race Results

With the fastest bike and run splits, Kristian Hoegenhaug was able to erase his swim deficit. It was a surprise to see him outrun more experienced athletes such as Ruedi Wild who finished second and Andreas Raelert (who DNF’d shortly after the half-marathon mark).

Female Race Results

In the female race, Susie Cheetham built a lead on the bike and was able to also have a strong run. In the end, she was able to manage the gap to Sarah Piampiano who had the marathon performance of the day – her 2:56 was just two minutes slower than the fastest run on the male side.
