IM South Africa 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

The conditions in South Africa seem to be pretty good – I calculated an adjustment of 6:24, mainly based on a pretty quick run (9:31). After last year’s very rough swim conditions, this year conditions were better but still relatively slow (-2:05) – typical for a cold ocean swim.

Male Race Results

Ronnie Schildknecht was in the lead for most of the day and won in a convincing fashion, leading the race for most of the day. Cyriel Viennot and Bas Diederen ran their way onto the podium:

Female Race Results

For the longest time, the story in the women’s was about Jodie Swallow: She led after the swim, then posted a Chrissie-level bike ride and started the run very strong. Around the 25k mark she started to have some issues and her pace dropped. (She still finished with a performance that would be wort a TOP 10 rating.) Jessie Donovan (posting the best run of the day) managed to overtake Jodie. She’s won her last three IMs (Lake Placid, Mont Tremblant and now South Africa) but is still not very well known. Not sure what her plans are, it will be interesting to see how she will do in a strong field. The podium was rounded off by Lucie Zelenkova-Reed.
