Race Conditions
Conditions in Florida were crazy fast this year, the adjustment of 28:36 was by far the fastest we’ve seen this year, and only the first edition of IM Sweden in 2012 (with a short run course) ever had a larger adjustment.
The swim was traditionally slower (and conditions looked pretty rough), while the bike accounts for most of the overall adjustment. However, the bike was just a little bit slower than last year (consistent with the difference of 4:04 to 4:02 from Andy Starykowicz. The main difference to last year was that the run was also quite fast. I don’t know if there were changes in the run course compared to last year, but the conditions also sounded pretty favourable for fast times.
Male Race Results
Even with the fast conditions, the results were pretty amazing. Only three weeks after Kona, Andy Starykowicz managed to improve the fastest bike time in an Ironman, and followed it up with a sub-3h marathon and the first sub-8h result by a US athlete. This wasn’t enough for the win, however, as Victor Del Corral ran a 2:37 marathon and finished in 7:53, the fastest time ever in a North American Ironman. Behind these two, Filip Osapaly’s debut IM pales a bit, though he also finished sub-8. A lot of other athletes also posted new IM PRs.

Female Race Results
Mirinda Carfrae made it clear that she was only in Florida to validate her Kona spot (which she did in a leisurely – for her! – 9:48). The clear race favourite was Yvonne Van Vlerken, even if she had just raced Kona. She delivered a strong performance, posting an 8:43, a new personal best over the IM distance. (Adjusting for race conditions, her Kona performance was even better.) Coming off the bike with Lisa Huetthaler, she quickly took control of the run. She can enjoy a long break now, being assured of a safe Kona spot.
Ashley Clifford was the surprising 2nd finisher – she managed to improve on her great 3rd place from last year, following a much improved bike ride with the only sub-3 marathon in the women’s field, and also finishing sub-9. Erika Csomor rounded out the podium in 3rd place.
