Ironman Western Australia 2019 – Analyzing Results

IMWA LogoCourse Conditions

This year conditions were calm with almost no wind but also hot temperatures on the run. This made the race (adjustment of 16.25) about three minutes quicker than last year but very much in line of what is typical for the course (course rating of 16:38). Most of that quick time comes from the bike leg (adjustment of 16 minutes).

The conditions helped  to set a number of new course records: Female winner Teresa Adam improved on the bike course record set by Mareen Hufe in 2016 (4:41:32) and the overall record set last year by Caroline Steffen (8:49:45). Alistair Brownlee was faster than the 2016 course record by Terenzo Bozzone (7:51:26) and the 2007 run course record by Robert Thomas (2:43:48).

Kona Qualifying

IM Western Australia has two male and two female slots, these go to

  • Teresa Adam, Sarah Piampiano
    and
  • Alistair Brownlee and Matt Burton.

The slot acceptance will be at Monday’s awards ceremony. In case one of these decline their slots, they would roll down to Gurutze Frades or Tim Berkel.

Ironman Arizona 2019 – Analyzing Results

IMArizona LogoCourse Conditions

Once again Arizona was a quick course (adjustment of 13:39, leading to a new course rating of 14:41), allowing two sub-9 finishes for the women Pros. It’s the bike leg that makes Arizona quick (bike adjustment of 15:08). However there have been years with faster conditions, and no new course records were set this year.

Kona Qualifying

There were two female Kona Pro slots on the line in Arizona, these go to

  • Heather Jackson
    and
  • Meredith Kessler.

In addition winner Sarah Crowley already had an Automatic Qualifier slot from finishing third in Kona which she validated.

Ironman Cozumel 2019 – Analyzing Results

IMCozumel Logo Course Conditions

As sometimes happens in Cozumel, the swim times were crazy fast this year, probably because of ocean currents and not because the swim course was short. This makes processing the data a bit harder for me as the “automated procedures” are not handling these edge conditions very well. The fast swim lead to an adjustment of 12:22, followed by a fast bike (adjustment of 18:33), leading to an overall adjustment of 27 minutes.

The course conditions probably helped the winners set new course records: Both Tyler Butterfield (7:44:01) and Carrie Lester (8:38:41) improved on the old records set in 2017 by Sebastian Kienle (7:48) and Lisa Roberts (8:54) when there was also a quick swim. Tyler also posted the fastest Ironman finish time in 2019. Carrie also set a new bike course record (as did Michael Weiss) while Tyler had a new fastest run in Cozumel.

Kona Qualifying

Ironman Cozumel has been designated “Latin American Regional Championships” and awarded three male and three female Kona Pro slots. These will go to

  • Carrie Lester, Maja Stage Nielsen and Michelle Vesterby
    and
  • Tyler Butterfield, Michael Weiss and Mario De Elias.

In addition, Tim O’Donnell validated his Automatic Qualifier slot he received by finishing second in Kona.
