Challenge Roth

Course Conditions

Challenge Roth is always a fast course, and this year was even faster than normal. The weather contributed a good part – the swim was wetsuit-legal (compared to last year’s non-wetsuit swim about three minutes quicker), then a fast bike with very little wind followed by a quick run. Compared to other years, the number of motor cycles on the course was much reduced, and it was probably the most fair edition of Roth in recent years.

There were a number of world bests set in Roth today. Magnus Ditlev posted a 3:57 bike split, to me the fastest ever time ever in a legit race. Magnus followed that uo with a 2:37 run to finish in an amazing time of 7:24:40, also a new fastest legitimate full-distance finish. (My post on “IM Records” will be updated in the next days.) Patrick Lange finished second with a 2:30 run, a few seconds quicker than his run in Israel.

It was also a record-setting day for the women. Daniela Ryf biked a 4:22, more than four minutes quicker than the old “world best” posted by her in Kona 2018. As she was also able to run a new marathon PR, she set a new females fastest time of 8:08, chopping a full ten minutes off the 12-year-old record from Chrissie Wellington (also set in Roth).

It was great to see the old record holders, Chrissie Wellington and Jan Frodeno, put the finisher’s medals on the new record holders, Daniela Ryf and Magnus Ditlev.

Course Conditions

The weathering Germany was quite warm, leading to a non-wetsuit swim (for the Pros), making the start of the day two to three minutes slower. There were different reports from the bike course about how much wind there was in the second loop, but it was still fast conditions, maybe a few minutes quicker than what is typical for the bike course in Roth. The slower swim and a slightly faster pretty much cancel each other out. Then the heat got to a lot of the Pros, and overall this year’s race was maybe five minutes slower than what we’ve seen in Roth before.

Magnus Ditlev posted a new bike course record, his 4:01:56 was almost four minutes quicker than Cam Wurf’s split from 2018. Magnus missed Jan Frodeno’s overall course record by just 9 seconds. Second place finisher Patrick Lange posted a new run course record, he improved on Lucy Van Lierde’s time from 1997 (though the changes in the run course make it hard to compare these two times). After the slower swim, Anne Haug was never quite in “record territory”, but she posted two second-fastest times (on the bike and the run) and overall for Roth the fourth-fastest time ever.

Course Conditions

The changes in the course makes comparing the results to other years and venues tricky. Because of construction work, the bike was shortened to roughly 170k – compared to other years the bike course was about 20 minutes quicker (which would correspond to maybe 15k). With all this uncertainty I’ll refrain from doing any comparisons of bike splits and “what would have been” – other than saying that the times would have been quick even with the regular bike course. The swim and run courses were unchanged to previous years. If anything, the run course was slightly slower this year, possibly because athletes raced the bike so much harder.

Some of the run splits we’ve seen this year were nothing short of amazing: Both winners posted super-fast marathons. Patrick Lange’s 2:38:20 was amazing to see, especially since he wasn’t pushed towards the end of the race. This was even eclipsed by third place finisher Felix Hentschel’s 2:35:40, a time that was even faster than the long-standing course record of 2:36:49 by Luc Van Lierde from 1997. Female winner Annie Haug also was faster than the female run course record: Her completely solo 2:43:50 was even faster than Chrissie Wellington’s 2:44:35 from 2011. Even if the shortened bike precludes these times from being recognized as “official” course records, they are amazing performances for sure!
