Ironman Cairns 2018 – Analyzing Results

IMCairnsLogoCourse Conditions

The racing in Cairns was fast and furious across the board, and the conditions favored quick times especially on the bike (even though no new bike course records were set). An adjustment of 13:54 is the fastest I have seen on this course.

There were a number of new course records: Winners Teresa Adam and Braden Currie set new overall records (improving the times set by Sarah Crowley and Josh Amberger just one year ago). Lauren Brandon claimed another swim course record, and there were also run course records by Beth McKenzie (first sub-3 run in Cairns) and Braden Currie (with the first sub-2:40).

Kona Qualifying

Here’s the athletes that have significantly improved their chances for a July slot:

  • Automatic Qualifiers: Teresa Adam, Braden Currie, Mirinda Carfrae (Kona winner, now validated)
  • Safe: Gurutze Frades, Javier Gomez, Tim O’Donnell
  • Bubble (might be enough): Tim Reed, Callum Millard, Denis Chevrot (all of them already have four races in their total, so it’ll be hard for them to improve without doing another Ironman)
  • Close (more points needed): Melanie Burke, Asa Lundstroem

In addition to these, Terenzo Bozzone, Tim Van Berkel, and Kyle Buckingham already had secured their slots before Cairns.

Challenge Roth 2018 (July 1st) – Entry List

TitlePage Roth Report ThumbI’m working on a Rating Report for this year’s race. It’s going to be the best resource to look forward to Challenge Roth and to follow the Pro races on-site or via the Challenge live stream. The Report is going to be a 60+-page PDF with information about the race, all Professional participants and their chances on July 1st. You can already pre-order it here (or by clicking on the image on the right) so you’ll receive it as soon as it is released.

Update June 19th: Removed a few athletes as they are no longer on the latest start list (Braden Currie, Bryan McCrystal, Heather Jackson, Helena Herrero) or have posted on social media that they won’t be racing (Boris Stein).

Female Race Participants

Heather Jackson is posted in the official start list (bib #62), but she has written on her blog that she decided to race IM Lake Placid. She confirmed to me that she won’t be racing in France. I am therefore posting the seedings (including the odds) as if she is not part of the field. (Update: June 19th: She’s no longer on the latest start list.)

The strength of the field is 11% of a typical Kona field.

Kona Qualifying

With just two more full months of racing before the first cutoff for Kona qualifying, here’s a look at what the male athletes will need to reach the projected cutoff of 3.500 points:

  • Win (2000 pts): Markus Thomschke
  • 2nd (1600 pts):  Giulio Molinari, Braden Currie (also on the list for Cairns)
  • 3rd (1280 pts): Romain Guillaume, Andrej Vistica
  • 4th (960 pts): TJ Tollakson
  • “Just finish”: Boris Stein
  • Already safe: Cameron Wurf, Antony Costes, Frederik Van Lierde (AQ)

The female cutoff will be around 4.400 points, that higher number can only be reached by a few women:

  • 6th (540): Lisa Roberts
  • 8th (305 pts): Manon Genet
  • “Just finish”: Heather Jackson (but likely racing in Lake Placid)
  • Already safe: Melissa Hauschildt, Carrie Lester

Ironman Philippines 2018 – Analyzing Results

IMPHI_LogoCourse Conditions

As expected, IM Philippines was a tough course, taking a lot out of the athletes. Especially the run was extremely slow, the adjustment of -4:25 was even harder than Kona.

Kona Qualifying Implications

Here are where the top finishers now are with regards to Kona qualifying:

  • Safe (for a July slot): Cameron Brown (but unclear if he will take the slot)
  • Close (but more points needed – cutoff projected at 4.400 for the females and 3.500 for the males):
Liz Blatchford (3.535), Simon Cochrane (3.105), Nick Baldwin (2.720)

Among the female athletes further back, Dimity-Lee Duke has the most points (2.660 from four races), she probably needs another 2.000 points result to be in the running for a slot.

Winning Odds

Male Race Participants

The men’s race looks like a repeat of last year’s race when Lionel and Sebi were neck to neck for most of the day:

  • Lionel Sanders: 55% (1-1)
  • Sebastian Kienle: 41% (1-1)

Female Race Participants

Anne Haug is the clear favorite on the female side – she has shown a number of very strong 70.3s this year. But she faces a large number of competitors including last year’s winner Lucy Charles who is likely to lead for the swim and a large portion of the bike. But when the others manage to catch Lucy towards the end of the bike, it’ll be a running race, and Anne holds most of the cards in that situation.

  • Anne Haug: 58% (1-1)
  • Lucy Charles: 11% (8-1)
  • Emma Pallant: 6% (15-1)
  • Helle Frederiksen: 6% (15-1)
  • Radka Kahlefeldt: 5% (18-1)
  • Annabel Luxford: 5% (19-1)
  • Heather Wurtele: 5% (21-1)
  • Ellie Salthouse: 3% (35-1)
