PTO Tour Edmonton 2022 (July 23rd and 24th) – Seedings

PTO Edmonton

The newly created PTO Tour starts with two events for the 2022 season, the Canadian Open in Edmonton and the US Open in Dallas (race on September 17th and 18th). Each race will offer a prize purse of 1 million US$, attracting top-ranked athletes across all distances. The female and male races will be shown live on various TV stations and through live streams (details on “How to Watch” and the start times in your time zone can be found on the PTO website).

Prize Money

The Canadian Open in Edmonton offers a total prize purse of more than one million US$, all finishers are going to receive at least 2,000 US$. Both winners are going to earn 100,000 US$.

A “Technical Note” on Expected Times

This is the first time we’re going to see a race on the 100k distance (2k swim, 80k bike, 18k run) in Edmonton which makes predicting specific times a “guessing game” as there is no data on the three-loop swim (with two Australian exits giving us a lot of splits!), the hilly bike ride (lots of 4% to 7% grades) and the run course with frequent turnarounds. This means that the times shown in the seedings below have to be taken with an even larger grain of salt than for other races. But I think they still provide some value in that the order of the athletes and – probably as important – the time difference between the athletes should be pretty reliable (at least for those with a decent number of half-distance races) and give a good indication of how the race might unfold when everyone is racing with their “paper form”. But even “paper form” is not very reliable for some athletes: For example, Alistair Brownlee is coming off an injury, or Henri Schoeman’s last race longer than Olympic Distance was Daytona all the way back in December 2020.

As always, the data in these tables should not be seen as the “final word” but rather as a starting point for discussion and speculation. At least for me, it makes it easier to spot “unusual things” as the race proceeds – and I hope it’ll give you extra enjoyment when preparing and following the race.

Ironman Vitoria-Gasteiz 2022 – Analyzing Results

VitoriaCourse Conditions

This was only the second time the Vitoria race was contested as a Pro Ironman race. Compared to 2019, this year’s race was 9 minutes slower, mainly because of the tougher run (6 minutes slower). Still, we’ve seen a number of course records. First, Cameron Wurf smashed the bike course record, his 4:01 was 15 minutes quicker than the fastest bike time in 2019 and almost ten minutes quicker than anyone else this year. On the run, winner Nick Kastelein broke the run and overall course records set by Eneko Llanos. The whole podium went sub-8 and faster than Eneko.

Kona Qualifying

IM Vitoria offered two Kona Pro slots. This will be offered to

  • Nick Kastelein
    and
  • Cameron Wurf.

You can find all Kona qualifiers here.

Challenge Roth 2022 – Analyzing Results

Logo RothCourse Conditions

The weathering Germany was quite warm, leading to a non-wetsuit swim (for the Pros), making the start of the day two to three minutes slower. There were different reports from the bike course about how much wind there was in the second loop, but it was still fast conditions, maybe a few minutes quicker than what is typical for the bike course in Roth. The slower swim and a slightly faster pretty much cancel each other out. Then the heat got to a lot of the Pros, and overall this year’s race was maybe five minutes slower than what we’ve seen in Roth before.

Magnus Ditlev posted a new bike course record, his 4:01:56 was almost four minutes quicker than Cam Wurf’s split from 2018. Magnus missed Jan Frodeno’s overall course record by just 9 seconds. Second place finisher Patrick Lange posted a new run course record, he improved on Lucy Van Lierde’s time from 1997 (though the changes in the run course make it hard to compare these two times). After the slower swim, Anne Haug was never quite in “record territory”, but she posted two second-fastest times (on the bike and the run) and overall for Roth the fourth-fastest time ever.
