IM Germany is a P-4000 race. It has a total prize purse of 150.000 US$. As a Regional Championship it also offers Automatic Qualifier slots for the male and female winners.

From a KPR perspective, Sebastian Kienle and Jan Frodeno still have to finish their validation race, but are otherwise already safe for Kona. Frederik Van Lierde has already validated by winning IM South Africa, but he’ll want to show the Germans he can still win in the big races.

Because Germany is a P-4000 race, a lot of athletes are within 2.000 (a Top 5) or even 3.000 points (Top 3), there are more than 10 athletes that could potentially cross the projected cutoff of 3.800 points. Eneko Llanos (3.910), Miquel Tinto (3.700) and Ty Butterfield (3.630) are already close and should be fine with just a few more points.

For Bas Diederen (2.790), Marko ALbert (2.160), Alessandro Degasperi (2.000), Andi Boecherer (1.640), Simon Billeau (1.570) and Andreas Raelert (1.560) it’ll be a lot harder, they need a good result in Frankfurt to get the points they need.

Similar to the men, there are athletes that are already safe (Carolin Steffen) or just need to finish (Daniela Ryf, Julia Gajer) in order to secure a Kona slot. (To have a longer look at Julia Gajer, check out my profile on her.)

As the women’s cutoff is projected to be 5.100 points, Michelle Vesterby (3.575), Tine Deckers (3.325) or Ruth Brennan-Morrey (3.235) need a Top 5 result for a slot. Astrid Ganzow (2.520), Jessie Donavan (2.405) or Kristin Möller (1.805) need at least a podium finish. All the others (including Sonja Tajsich, 1.105) have to look for the Automatic Qualifier slot as the winner if they want to qualify for Kona in Frankfurt.

Male Race Participants

The race will be mainly a rematch from last year between Sebastian and Frederik. I’m sure Jan would love to spoil their party – his two IMs last year (Frankfurt and Kona) showed the amazing potential he has. In addition there are a couple of other well known names that could make the race even more exciting:

  • Sebastian Kienle: 38% (2-1)
  • Frederik Van Lierde: 38% (2-1)
  • Andreas Raelert: 6% (15-1)
  • Eneko Llanos: 5% (20-1)
  • Jan Frodeno: 4% (23-1)
  • David Dellow: 4% (23-1)

Female Race Participants

Based on the pure numbers, Caroline is the slight favorite. But she wasn’t able to show her full strength in her last races, while Daniela is going from one good race to the next. Behind these two Swiss, a couple of other European athletes would like to become European Champion: Julia was 6th in Kona last year and would love to be in the mix in Frankfurt. Tine, Kristin, Sonja and Michelle are probably more focused on placing well in order to qualify for Kona:

The KPR situation for the men looks very interesting. Among the participants, Romain Guillaume (4.950) is already safe for a Kona slot. For Domenico Passuello (3.000) and Jeremy Juekiewicz (2.755) a podium spot should be enough, while Mauro Baertsch (1.905), Mike Schifferle (1.760) and Patrick Jaberg (1.724) would need a win to get close to the projected cutoff of 3.800 points. Simon Billeau (1.570), Victor Del Corral (1.420) and Drew Scott (1.280) are probably too far back for a July slot even with a good result in France, but could improve their position for qualifying in future races.

The female athletes are mainly racing for the prestige of winning an Ironman. The best placed athlete in the KPR is Cait Snow, but with 1.735 points even she is far short of the projected cutoff of 5.100 points.

Based on the numbers, it looks like a close race between Victor Del Corral (2nd last year) and Romain Guillaume (10th in Kona), but Victor has been struggling to have a good result since last year (DNF in Kona, 9th in South Africa). Domenico Passuello has bib #1, he is the recent winner of IM Taiwan. Jeremy Jurkiewicz was fourth here last year, and Boris Stein had great results last summer, winning IM Switzerland.

Last year’s second (Cait Snow) and third place (Lisa Roberts) are back to contend for the title this year, while Jean Collonge will try be the first French winner since 2007. Emma Pooley will make the race interesting, her strength on the bike is well suited for the tough and technical course in Nice, and I expect her to be at the front of the race in T2. Emma has run a stand-alone marathon in 2:44, so she surely wants to prove she can run faster in an Ironman than the 3:21 she ran in Melbourne.

After winning Brasil, Marino Vanhoenacker has an automatic qualifier slot, but it is unclear if he is going to accept it. Ivan Rana (4.560 points) is also safe for Kona if he wants to. Then there is Michael Weiss (3.427 points) who needs a few more points for a slot.

Behind these, there are Miguel Fidalgo (1.998 points) and David Plese (1.325 points) are the athletes with the most KPR points, but they are probably too far back to be able to secure a slot in Austria.

There are a lot of female athletes looking for their remaining KPR points in order to qualify in July (estimated cutoff at 5.100 points): Corinne Abraham (4.725), Eva Wutti (4.170), Lisa Huetthaler (3.595) and Sarah Piampiano (3.435 but already 5 races) already have a decent number of points.

Andy Potts only has to finish an IM in order to be assured a Kona slot. Pedro Gomes (4.090 points) is already in a great position for a July slot, but already has three IMs in his score, so he has to finish fourth or better to improve. Make Twelsiek (3.790 points) is a few points back from Pedro, but has an empty points slot so will likely improve his score and secure a slot. After his recent 70.3 win in Boulder, Callum Millward (currently 3.225 points and an empty points slot) is also on track for a Kona slot, but needs at least a fifth place or better.

Behind these Matthew Russell (2.440, but already 3 IMs), Leon Griffin (2.300) Paul Matthews (1.900) would need to win to get in the mix for a Kona slot. Barrett Brandon (1.600), Trevor Delsaut (1.525) and Patrick Evoe (1.365) can improve their score and get close, but even a win probably won’t be enough for a slot.

Trevor Wurtele (2.125) also has a decent number of KPR points, but has already said he is not interested in racing Kona this year.

There are three athletes that are very close to a July Kona slot: Amanda Stevens (5.030 but already 3IMs), Dede Griesbauer (4.500) and Heather Jackson (3.800 but already 5 races in her total) are looking for the few remaining points to qualify in the first round.

Katy Blakemore (2.990) can get very close to the projected 5.100 points cutoff, while Kim Schwabenbauer (1.515) or Tamara Kozulina (1.915) are too far back for a slot even if they do well in Coeur d’Alene.
