Ironman Arizona 2017 – Analyzing Results

IMAZLogo

Race Conditions

The last two years conditions in Tempe were very fast, this year was somewhat slower than that but pretty typical for Arizona: A fast bike followed by a potentially quick but still challenging run. Even in the slightly slower conditions, there was one new course record: Jen Annett posted a 4:38 bike leg, improving last year’s bike course record by Yvonne Van Vlerken by 2.5 minutes.

Male Race Results

As in Kona, Lionel Sanders showed his improved swim: Last year he was five minutes behind after the swim, this year it was just over two minutes. By mile 15 he had taken the lead on the bike and no one was following him. He posted the fastest bike leg and in T2 had a lead of over 10 minutes. He also had the fastest run and won his third IM Arizona in a row. After his disappointing Kona DNF, Brent McMahon had a solid second place race, always being in a good position for a podium finish and then coming through with the second best marathon, but never really in a position to challenge Lionel. Jeremy Jurkiewicz had a good day and claimed the last spot on the podium.

Female Race Results

The Danish duo of Helle Frederiksen and Michelle Vesterby were the fastest swimmers, but it took Kaisa Sali only 50k to make up her four minute gap after the swim and the Scandinavian trio rode together for most of the bike. Jen Annett had an almost ten-minute deficit after the swim, but she took the lead in the last 50k of the bike and was leading into T2. While Michelle had fallen back a bit, Kaisa and Helle closed the gap to Jen and took the lead after 8 miles. In the end, Kaisa was the fastest runner of the day and winning her second Ironman title (and also validating her 2018 Kona slot). Helle Frederiksen continued to run strong to take second place, finishing sub-9 in her debut on the long distance. Jen Annett also finished under 9 hours and took third. Compared to the fast runners in front of her, Michelle Vesterby faded a bit on the run, but she was still able to take fourth place, holding off Sarah Piampiano who finished fifth.

Ironman Mar del Plata (Dec 3rd) – Seedings

IMArgentinaUpdate Nov 30th: Andy Potts confirmed to be not racing.

This is the first race on this course – so there are no previous winners, course records or course ratings. The expected times are based on a “neutral” course, a lot of Ironman courses are faster than that.

KPR points and Prize Money

IM Mar del Plata is a P-2000 race. It has a total prize purse of 40.000 US$.

Ironman Malaysia 2017 – Analyzing Results

IMMalaysia

Race Conditions

Based on the results, this year’s IM Malaysia seemed to have pretty “fast” conditions. But for Malaysia this means that it wasn’t quit as hot as it normally is – and that was caused by rain pouring down on the competitors, not exactly the most comfortable racing conditions!

Still the “less hot” conditions allowed Diana Riesler to post a new overall course record (improving on Belinda Granger’s 2009 time), and Romain Guillaume was able to post the fastest bike and overall times since 2014 when Malaysia became an official Ironman again.

Male Race Results

As is typical for him, Rom Guillaume was part of the leading swim group and then took control of the race on the bike, building a lead of more than ten minutes by T2. In most of his 2017 races he struggled on the run, but in Malaysia he had enough energy for a solid 3:10 marathon, winning by four minutes. Second place went to Jens Petersen-Bach who had the fastest marathon of the day with 3 hours flat. Roman Deisenhofer was third, he was able to have the better marathon after racing most of the bike with Christian Kramer who finished in fourth place.

Female Race Results

Laurel Wassner was first out of the water, but the IM Taiwan winner didn’t have a good day and quickly lost ground. Pre-race favorites and last year’s top finishers Diana Riesler and Mareen Hufe came out of the water within second of each other, but Diana had the better bike legs and slowly pulled away from Mareen and the rest of the field, building a lead of roughly 8 minutes in T2. Mareen wasn’t able to challenge Diana’s lead on the run, and they once again finished 1-2. Diana claimed her fourth IM Malaysia title in a row, while Mareen claimed her seventh runner-up finish in an Ironman. The last spot on the podium went to Manon Genet in her second pro IM race. She was almost run down by Saleta Castro who had the fastest marathon in the female field.

Fastest Times on the IM-distance (Overall & Individual Legs)

TriRating reader Marcin has sent me the following question:

“I was searching for a list of fastest bike splits in long course triathlons and was not able to find anything more current than 2015! I know that a lot of people would be interested in that especially now since Cameron Wurf will try to break 4 hours while winning a race on December 3rd in Ironman Western Australia! Do you possibly have such a list?”

Using my database with Ironman results from 2005 onwards, here is my list of fastest times overall and for each of the individual legs. (This means that some older results are not included, for the “definitive lists” of sub-8 for the men and sub-9 finishes for the women, check out Tri247.com.) I am also not including results from races with courses that have been acknowledged as short, for example because of construction the bike course in this year’s IM Frankfurt was short by somewhere between 3 and 5k.

Winning Odds

Male Race Participants

Sebastian Kienle has changed his season plan a bit, this year he’ll be trying to do an early validation of his Kona slot and of course he is the clear favorite for Cozumel. Of course there will be a slight question mark how fresh he is going to be just six weeks after Kona, but that applies to most of his competition as well.

  • Sebastian Kienle: 79% (1-1)
  • Michael Weiss: 7% (12-1)
  • Ivan Rana: 6% (17-1)
  • Stefan Schmid: 3% (30-1)

Female Race Participants

The female race also features a number of athletes that have raced Kona, but Michelle, Anja, and Sonja haven’t quite had the race they were looking for. Lisa Roberts will be on the start line coming off a win at IM Louisville one day after Kona.

  • Michelle Vesterby: 51% (1-1)
  • Lisa Roberts: 23% (3-1)
  • Anja Beranek: 11% (8-1)
  • Sonja Tajsich: 6% (17-1)

In addition to the athletes who already have a lot of experience on the IM distance, Helle Frederiksen is also on the start list (though it’s not clear if she’ll race here or in Arizona a week before) and will be looking to mix things up.
