Ironman Germany 2026 – Analyzing Results

Course Conditions

This year’s edition of IM Germany came at the end of a heat wave of more than 40°C the day before and up to 38°C on race day. You could also see the extreme heat in the official water temperature of 29.1°C. From an interview with the head of Ironman “DACH” region, Daniel Gottschall, it even sounds as if a complete cancellation – as for Ironman and 70.3 Nice on the same weekend – was discussed between the town of Frankfurt and Germany. In the end, a shortened course was agreed upon – full swim, 125k of two shortened bike loops, and a half marathon of two instead of the normal four run loops.

Of course, this created a very unusual format that can’t be compared to the typical distances.

Kona Qualifying

Even with the shortened course, IM Germany still hat six Kona Pro slots. These will be offered to

  • Antonio Benito Lopez, Kacper Stepniak, Jamie Riddle, Nathan Guerbeur, Jan Stratmann and Magnus Ditlev.

The other athletes in the Top 12 were already qualified. The full list of Kona qualifiers can be found here

Ironman Germany 2026 (June 28th) – Seedings

IMFRA20 Update: On Friday, June 26th, Ironman announced that because of excessive heat they will shorten the course to roughly 125k on the bike, followed by a half marathon.

I have started to re-calibrate the seedings in the following way:

  • Swim: unchanged
  • Bike: linear adjustment from 180k to 125k
  • Run: half the time for the marathon

What is next to impossible to calculate is how much athletes will be able to race faster than their “Ironman pace” at these shortened distances. Especially the heat is an unpredictable factor, and “racing faster” will increase the heat stress, possibly counteracting the shortened race duration. Here are my best estimates at how much faster Pro athletes might go:

  • Bike: I’ve compared a fast Ironman bike split (say 4 hours in Frankfurt) to a fast bike split in a half-distance race such as Challenge Samorin or 70.3 Bahrain. A 1:54 bike split there is about 5% quicker (45 km/h compared to 47.3 km/h). Since the bike distance in Frankfurt is somewhere in the middle, I’ve added a 2.5% speed increase to the scaled-down time above.
As an example, Casper’s originally predicted 4:01 bike split is scaled down to 2:47 for 125k and then sped up to 2:44.
  • Run: A similar comparison gives an even bigger speed increase on the run – a 2:31 marathon vs. a 1:08 half marathon split (say at last year’s 70.3 Worlds) is about an 11% speed increase. I’m using a speed increase of 5% since I assume that heat will make it hard to go much faster on Sunday. Also, they will be coming off a longer swim and bike than in Marbella.
For Casper, the expected marathon time was 2:34. Half of that would be 1:17, which then speeds up to 1:13:29.

Adding all this up, it creates the updated seedings below – which probably have to be taken with an even bigger grain of salt than usual.

This changes the relative times between the legs as follows:

Relative Time Swim Bike Run
shortened course 17% 57% 27%
original course 11% 54% 36%
Difference 6% 3% -9%

The bike’s share of the overall time hardly changes, most of the impact will be from the run to the swim. While this doesn’t change much at the front of the race, it does favor the stronger swimmers (such as Jamie Riddle or Andreas Salvisberg) and is a disadvantage for the faster runners (such as Jonas Hoffmann).

While it’s unfortunate that we won’t see a full Ironman, Sunday’s race will be an interesting, new dynamic – and a lot of uncertainty. Who will be able to deal best with these unforeseen changes, who might “overthink” things, who will go out too hard and the blow up in the noon heat?

Ironman Germany 2025 – Analyzing Results

IMFRA20Course Conditions

Similar to last year, Frankfurt was a very fast course – at least partly aided by a short bike course (between 175 and 177 km). To me, this makes the bike and overall times not eligible for course records – sorry to Kristian Hogenhaug (3:52:10 bike leg) and Kristian Blummenfelt (7:25:57 overall). However, Kristian B’s run time of 2:30:59 on the same run course as the last few years will be added to my course records table.

Nice Qualifiers

IM Frankfurt offered five Nice slots for the MPRO. These will be offered to

  • Kristian Hogenhaug, Cameron Wurf, Kacper Stepniak, Andrea Salvisberg and Johannes Vogel.

Kristian Blummenfelt, Caser Stornes, Gustav Iden, Jonas Hoffmann, Rudy von Berg, Patrick Lange, Magnus Ditlev and Paul Schuster were already qualified. You can find all Nice and Kona qualifiers here.

(*) The 2024 race had a slightly shortened bike course (about 177k instead of 180k) which makes the bike times ineligible for course records. It probably also contributed to fast overall times and possibly a faster run time.
