IM Switzerland 2011 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

This year’s IM Switzerland was pretty typical – an adjustment of 13:28 means that it was just a little bit faster than the course rating of 12:01 implies. However, there were a bit fewer pro athletes than normal – 17 as compared to the more typical 30+ athletes. In contrast, the start list for IM Germany looks pretty full, so WTC seems to succeed in steering pro athletes to fewer, better paid races.

Male Results

On the men’s side, Ronnie Schildknecht successfully defended his title:

Rank Name Nation Actual Time Expected Time
1 Ronnie Schildknecht SWI 08:19:51 08:21:30
2 Clemente Alonso-McKernan ESP 08:27:56 08:38:24

11 Damien Landon FRA 09:49:55 09:25:35
12 Marek Nemcik SVK 11:44:49 12:00:32

He had to work quite hard for it on the run, where he battled with Mathias Hecht for quite some time. Mathias came in third after being overtaken by the fastest runner, Clemente Alonso.

Female Results

With Karin Thürig, we also had another repeat winner on the female side:

Rank Name Nation Actual Time Expected Time
1 Karin Thuerig SWI 09:03:26 09:09:23
2 Amy Marsh USA 09:11:36 09:19:27

7 Megumi Shigaki JPN 11:49:02 n/a
8 Miranda Alldritt CAN 12:52:27 10:35:15

Amy Marsh came in second (again improving her rating), while Erika Csomor surprisingly raced again (just one week after her great time in Austria) and came in third.

Challenge Roth 2011 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

Just one week after Austria, the world record was broken again – this time, both the men’s and the women’s world best times were broken. As Austria the week before (race adjustment of 23:59), conditions in Roth were really good, even a bit better: Roth 2011 gets an adjustment of 24:25, the fastest I have ever seen and more than four minutes quicker than last year. (It also means that I rank Andreas’ time as quicker than Marino’s time from Austria, but Chrissie’s time from last year was actually a better performance than her time this year.)

Male Results

On the male side, Andreas Raelert bested Marino’s time from Austria a week ago by more than four minutes:

Rank Name Nation Actual Time Expected Time
1 Andreas Raelert GER 07:41:33 07:55:42
2 Sebastian Kienle GER 07:57:06 07:54:37
3 Keegan Williams NZL 08:16:01 08:32:02

17 Margus Tamm EST 09:15:08 08:52:48
18 Nicholas Kinsey GBR 09:22:46 09:32:22

21 Reinaldo Oliveira BRA 09:56:26 09:23:15
22 Glen Gore Sou 10:17:51 09:21:18
23 Daniel Wells CAN 10:49:44 09:06:59

Expected time is based on athlete’s rating (prior to race) and race conditions.

Although he was in front of Sebastian Kienle the whole day, apparently he felt pushed to the new world record. Andreas improved his rating a bit, securing his first spot in the rankings. Sebastian also put in a great time, going sub-8 for the second time in his second IM-distance race – giving him the 2nd place in the rankings. It would be great to see him race on another course in Kona, but he’s still pretty young. Keegan Williams made another step forward, he seems to be improving all the time.

Female Results

On the female side, Chrissie managed to go even faster than a year ago:

Rank Name Nation Actual Time Expected Time
1 Chrissie Wellington GBR 08:18:13 08:32:29
2 Julia Wagner GER 08:56:23 n/a
3 Rebekah Keat AUS 08:59:22 09:03:02
4 Belinda Harper NZL 09:06:47 10:01:31
5 Belinda Granger AUS 09:12:56 09:18:24
6 Heike Priess GER 09:40:01 10:16:14
7 Alma Sarapuu EST 09:41:42 10:16:17

10 Helen Buley Sou 10:11:18 10:09:43
11 Zeljka Saban   10:38:20 11:15:35

Expected time is based on athlete’s rating (prior to race) and race conditions.

German rookie Julia Wagner started her IM-distance career with a sub-9 and a second place. Bek Keat managed to post another sub-9, solidifying her spot in the TOP 10 rankings.

Challenge Roth 2011 – Predictions (Main Post)

As per usual, you can find additional information on the participants in the detail post.

Previous Results

Challenge Roth calls itself “the best of the old races”. It’s been an official IM race until the mid-2000s and managed to survive even after going out on their own. It’s a really fast course with a course rating of 18:54 and has been the site of the just-broken world record time.

It always attracts quite a few really good, strong athletes – mainly from Germany and Europe, so some names may not be that well known in the US. Last year’s race was won by Rasmus Henning in a fantastic time of 7:52 – but even going that fast he had to battle long-distance rookie Sebastian Kienle who posted a 7:59 in his first IM-distance race.

On the women’s side, Chrissie Wellington annihilated the world record with an unbelievable 8:19. (I’d rather avoid the WTC-speak of a “world best at another long distance race in Germany”.)

Male Participants

Sebastian Kienle is back for his second IM-distance race – and he’s going to battle it out with Andreas Raelert:

Rank Name Nation Expected Time Rating Rank
1 Sebastian Kienle GER 07:58:29 (08:16:17)

24 Jan Strangmuller USA 09:45:41 10:07:28 546

Sebastian has just one race result so no “official” rating as of now – it’ll be very interesting to see if he can go as fast as last year! Given his race tactics (usually going out pretty quick on the bike), it’ll be great to follow. There’s been some smack talk on the web and in the German press, underlining the fact that this race appears to be as important as Kona for these German athletes. (An interesting side note: As far as I know, Andreas still has to do an official IM to validate his Kona spot. He doesn’t have much time left, especially if he’s going to race Roth quite hard!)

After these two, there is a bit of a gap. Jürgen Zäck is an “old” athlete coming back for another race, his rating (from one race six years back) is probably not a true reflection of what he’s able to do right now – I’ve got to update the methodology for these rare cases. James Cunnama and Keegan Williams are probably for a fast time – one more thing to watch what these upcoming athletes are going to be able to do.

Female Participants

I don’t think you’ll find anyone willing to beat against Chrissie:

Rank Name Nation Expected Time Rating Rank
1 Chrissie Wellington GBR 08:37:24 08:56:39 1
2 Rebekah Keat AUS 09:08:14 09:28:38 9
3 Belinda Granger AUS 09:23:51 09:44:49 43
4 Sonja Jaarsveld Net 09:30:15 09:51:28 57
5 Heather Gollnick USA 09:32:04 09:53:21 59
6 Belinda Harper NZL 10:07:25 10:30:01 171
7 Celia Kuch NZL 10:10:46 10:33:29 179
8 Helen Buley ZAF 10:15:33 10:38:27 187
9 Alma Sarapuu EST 10:21:46 10:44:54 202
10 Heike Priess 10:22:16 10:45:25 206
11 Zeljka Saban 11:22:15 11:47:38 267

My guess is that she will try to put another quick result in, but I think she’ll not go all out as last year (and try to avoid “weakening” for her Kona prep). Bek Keat and Belinda Granger have raced in Roth a couple of times before and seem to love this race. But they won’t be a match for Chrissie …

IM Switzerland 2011 – Predictions (Main Post)

As per usual, you can find additional information on the participants in the detail post.

Previous Results

Switzerland is a pretty quick course (course rating of 11:46), just a little bit slower than IM Florida (13:38).

Last year’s winners were Ronnie Schildknecht in 8:12 and Karin Thürig in 9:00. Local athletes are always going strong, so watch out for the Swiss!

Male Participants

Ronnie Schildknecht is back to defend his title and tops the predictions:

Rank Name Nation Expected Time Rating Rank

As Swiss athletes will really focus on their home race, I also expect Mathias Hecht (winner of IM St. George) to deliver a strong performance. All in all it’s a nice big, pretty evenly spaced field, so we can expect some exciting racing.

Female Participants

As on the men’s side, last year’s winner is al´so back to defend:

Rank Name Nation Expected Time Rating Rank
1 Karin Thuerig SWI 09:11:26 09:23:31 8
2 Amy Marsh USA 09:21:33 09:33:51 14

8 Anja Ippach GER n/a unrated n/a
9 Megumi Shigaki JPN n/a unrated n/a
10 Kathrin Mannweiler GER n/a unrated n/a

Amy Marsh has won IM Brasil earlier this year, so if she’s on form she’ll also contend for the win. Erika Csomor is on the start list, but she has just raced IM Austria so I don’t expect her to be on the start line. But then you never know with these TBB athletes …
