As you can see, the 2016 swim adjustment of -1:01 is considerably faster (or maybe “less slow”) than the overall swim rating of -3:43. Apparently, this was caused by moving the turnaround markers which have have shifted over the years. Therefore, it is likely that this year’s swim times will be a bit faster than in previous years and that most athletes will swim faster than the expected times (which are based on the slower swim rating).

Announcing the Kona 2017 Rating Report

2017 TitlePage Kona Report 700px

For the 2017 Ironman World Championships in Kona I have released a 120+-page Rating Report with tons of information:

  • Detailed results and analysis of last year’s race
  • Information about the Kona course, top Kona finishers and the current course records
  • The Kona 2017 start list and my predictions and odds for the Pro athletes
  • How the race may unfold and what to watch for when the race is going on
  • Details about each Pro including their input and a lot of photos they have supplied

The Report is available for free, but it would be great if you can support my work before Kona and during the year by donating an amount of your choice, for example the list price of a regular tri magazine (around 7$).

The Kona Rating Report is the ideal information to have when following the Ironman Kona coverage!

Kona 2017 Resources

Here is a list of resources for Kona 2017 (race on Saturday, October 14th):

I’ve had the chance to participate in a few recent podcast episodes, discussing the upcoming Kona race:

Here are some interesting articles written by friends in the Triathlon-Industry (please email me when you’ve found something of note that should be included!):

  • Tim Heming has written for the British “220 Triathlon” magazine about his Top 10 picks for the male Pros (female picks will be added at a later point).
  • Stef Hanson from Witsup is doing a series on the “Wahini Warriors” for this year’s female Pro race. So far, there are episodes on Michelle Vesterby and Sarah Piampiano, and Stef has probably added a few more since I updated this post.
  • A nice video on YouTube by “szTri” about Jan Frodeno and his motivation for this season: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC3-Q2qaFNo.
  • Talbot Cox has posted a number of great “vlogs” on his YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/talbotcox44) about the Pro athletes participating in Kona.
  • The “Breakfast with Bob” interview videos have started. You can watch the Monday interviews (and the following day’s episodes) on the Babbitville YouTube Channel.

I’ll add to this list as soon as my friends and I release more information closer to the race!

Unofficial KPR & 2017 Kona Pro Slot Allocation for August Cutoff

2017 TitlePage Kona Report ThumbHere is my calculation of the KPR at the end of August, deciding the final 10 male and 7 female slots (in addition to the July slots). You’ll always find all Kona Pros in my “Always Up-to-date Kona 2017 Startlist“.

My results are unofficial, the official results will be posted on the Ironman website at http://eu.ironman.com/triathlon/triathlon-rankings/points-system.aspx (but as far as I can tell will show the same data).

There is still going to be some time before all slots have been accepted or maybe rolled down to the next athletes. Athletes with rankings shown in brackets (such as “(11)”) are out of the slot positions and have to hope for a rolldown slot. For now there is some speculation whether Marino Vanhoenacker and Chris McDonald would accept their slots.

Once the field has been finalized, I will work on this year’s version of the Kona Rating Report, looking at the field and each athlete’s chances for a good result. The free report will be released in time before the Kona race, you can already pre-order your copy.

Male KPR Rankings

Rank Name Points
DECL Vanhoenacker, Marino 4.555
1 Weiss, Michael 4.430
2 Wiltshire, Harry 3.765
3 Wurf, Cameron 3.485
4 Fachbach, Markus 3.400
5 Molinari, Giulio 3.395
6 Chevrot, Denis 3.390
7 Fox, Michael 3.355
8 Tohara, Kaito 3.330
9 López Diaz, Carlos 3.175
10 McDonald, Chris 3.048
(11) Llanos, Eneko 2.975
(12) Croneborg, Fredrik 2.820

Update Aug 22nd: All Top 10 males except for Marino have accepted their slots.

Update Aug 26th: Marino has declined his slot, and Chris McDonald accepted the rolldown. This means that all August slots have been decided.

Female KPR Rankings

Rank Athlete Points
1 Joyce, Rachel 5.880
2 Moeller, Kristin 5.120
3 McCauley, Jocelyn 4.415
4 Holst, Tine 4.295
Decl Kessler, Meredith 4.265
5 Chura, Haley 4.180
6 Bartlett, Nikki 4.055
7 Collonge, Jeanne 3.910
(8) Wutti, Eva 3.820
(9) Mack, Danielle 3.820

Nominally, Meredith Kessler would receive a slot but she’s pregnant and so is extremely likely to decline. I assume she will still be asked (and the rolldown procedure to take a while), but Jeanne Collonge should receive a rolldown slot. (Update Aug 21st: Jeanne has posted on her Facebook page that she has received an invitation.) In case more slots roll down, Eva Wutti would be the next in line, she has the better tie-breaking score than Danielle Mack who has the same number of points.

Update Aug 22nd: All slots on the female side have settled. As expected Meredith declined, and all slots (including Jeanne’s) have been accepted.

Always Up-to-date Kona 2017 Startlist

KPRTitleAfter all Kona slots have been decided, here is the preliminary start list for Kona 2017. There can still be some changes to the list – in addition to the August rolldown some athletes may get injured and decide not to start after all. There may be a few days in early September for a slot to roll down, but not closer to the race – that slot will just be gone then. I will update this list if any slots are declined or athletes announce that they won’t start. I will also update the list once Ironman assigns bib numbers. For now the lists are sorted in alphabetical order.

I provide a lot more details on the race and the participants in my free “Kona Rating Report” which you can order at https://gum.co/Kona2017 (donations welcome).

Lastest Updates

  • October 11th: Tim Don won’t be racing – in an Instagram post he says that he was hit by a car while riding his bike in Kona. He fractured his C2 vertebra and will require a brace for a few weeks but luckily no operation.

Injury List

Unfortunately, there are a few athletes that have crashed or suffer from an injury. They have to make recovery from surgery and injuries their top priority for now.

  • On August 16th Will Clarke was in a crash and suffered a separated shoulder that needed surgery. Will
Update Aug 30th: Will posted on his Facebook page that his injuries turned out to be worse than expected and “hopes of getting to Kona start line are stopped right here.”
  • Tine Holst crashed on August 28th and broke her collarbone. She’s also had surgery and is back home to recover. Tine
Update Aug 14th: Tine posted on her Facebook page that she needed a second surgery. Doctors have advised her not to use her arm for some time to allow for proper healing, forcing her to call an end to her season.
  • Andi Boecherer had a DNF in his early September prep race at 70.3 Santa Cruz. On his (German language) Facebook page he writes that he thinks he suffered a tear in his plantar tendon and will be flying home to Germany for treatment and making a start in Kona impossible.
  • On September 18th Carlos Lopez Dias posted on his Facebook page that he’s been hit by a car while training: Carlos
It sounds as if there won’t be lasting damage, but the broken bones and stitches will take some time to heal and he won’t be able to race in Kona.
  • Update Sept 25th: Kaito Tohara announced on his Facebook page that he suffered another broken collarbone and that “the road to Kona is over”. He hopes to still be able to start in Kona, but even then just race to finish.

Fingers crossed for Will, Tine, Andi, Carlos and Kaito for a speedy recovery!
