Ironman South Africa 2024 – Analyzing Results

For the first time since 2018, IM South Africa was able to go ahead with a normal swim. Overall conditions have been quite slow (adjustment of -5:03), even for the tough South African standard (new course Rating 2:50 – so this year was about 8 minutes slower “than normal”). Nonetheless, there was a new bike course record: Eventual winner Rasmus Svenningsson rode a 4:14:35, improving the old record held by Raynard Tissink from 2011 by five minutes. The course has undergone a few changes since then, but his time was never broken.

Nice and Kona Qualifying

South Africa had four slots each for the men (Kona) and women (Nice). These will be offered to:

  • Marta Sanchez, Diede Diederiks, Laura Zimmermann and Susie Cheetham for the women
    and
  • Rasmus Svenningsson, Mathias Petersen, Cameron Wurf and Leonard Arnold for the men.

In addition, Daniela Ryf validated her AQ slot, and Marlene De Boer already had a slot from IM Cozumel. You can find the full list of 2024 qualifiers here.

Once again, IM South Africa started with a shortened swim – this year it was lightning and a predicted storm that lead to a swim of about 700m. Th least time IM South Africa was able to have a full swim was in 2018. Hopefully the 2024 edition can finally deliver the next full-distance Ironman event.

Kona Qualifying

As a Regional Championship, IM South Africa offered four male and four female IM World Championship slots. These will go to:

  • Leon Chevalier, Bradley Weiss, Mathias Petersen, and Rasmus Svenningsson for the men (Nice),
    and
  • Laura Philipp, Fenella Langridge, Penny Slater, and Laura Zimmermann for the women (Kona).

Justine Mathieux was third across the line but DQ’d even before the podium ceremony. (From what I have heard, she received a drafting penalty but didn’t serve it.)
