Challenge Roth 2017 – Analyzing Results

(Updated July 11th with DNFs and a discussion of the Race Conditions.)

Course Conditions

The prevailing impression from Roth seems to be that the race was slower in past years, and that especially the new run course was harder than the old one, leading to slower times. However, this perception is not backed up by my data analysis, the adjustment for this year was about five minutes slower than last year, but all three legs were just a little bit slower.

In addition we have seen a number of fast times:

  • Bart Aernouts posted his first sub-8 finish, and he ran the marathon almost exactly at the time I predicted (predicted 2:43:56, actual time 2:44:10).
  • Even though Daniela’s race was hyped as “world record attempt” and she was well short of her time from last year, it is still a fantastic result considering her injury in the first half of the year. (After the awards she smiled that she still has a lot of upside for Kona.) Her 8:40 finish is the fastest finish of 2017 by quite a large margin (she also has the second fastest – 8:47 from South Africa), and her 4:37 bike split is the fastest of the year and the fifth fastest ever on the IM distance.
  • Laura Siddall posted three PBs in Roth: Her fastest bike split, her fastest run split and her fastest overall time.
  • Lisa Roberts showed that you can run fast on the new run course: Her 2:56 marathon lead to her first sub-9 finish and is the second fastest marathon of the year so far. (Kelly Williamson was just five seconds faster at IM Texas.)
Therefore I don’t think that the new run course will slow down the future times, it’ll be interesting to see the times when there are more realistic expectations and a different race dynamic leads to the fast racers pushing each other.

Male Race Results

Bart Aernouts had another great race after IM Lanzarote and won the race on the back of the fastest marathon of the day:

Roth M1 Bart

Second place – as last year – went to Joe Skipper. He once again ran through the field but couldn’t quite match Bart’s pace:

Roth M2 Joe

Maurice Clavel was showing a courageous first long-distance race. After Nils Frommhold had to end his race after a crash on the bike course, he found himself in the lead, which he was able to hold until the later parts of the marathon. Still, he was happy with his third place finish and celebrated on the finish line:

Roth M3 Maurice

Finishing fourth, Timo Bracht said good-bye to Roth with a hard earned finish:

Female Race Results

It was clear that Daniela would be next to impossible to beat unless her injury had left her severely unfit. She worked hard for a good time posting the fastest swim and bike split, but said she struggled a bit in the second half of the marathon. She still won with a fast time of 8:40 and with more than ten minutes to spare:Roth F1 Dani

Laura Siddall improved on her fourth place finish from last year, but continued her string of second place finishes:

Roth F2 Laura

Third place was the surprise of the day: Lisa Roberts was a late entry and flew under the radar for the swim and bike, but she ended up with the only sub-3 marathon of the day, the fastest by nine minutes:

Roth F3 Lisa

Ironman Germany 2017 – Analyzing Results

(Update July 11th: Added DNFs, comments on the Race Conditions and Kona Qualifying Implications.)

Race Conditions

The main course relevant discussion before the start was the shortened bike course (officially 177k because construction made a section at the far end impossible to use) and how much that would affect the times. Based on the data analysis, the overall times were not affected too much compared to last year, but the bike was considerably faster (by roughly 8 minutes, so indicating the course was closer to 5k short) and we have some super-fast bike splits: Both Sebi Kienle’s 4:02 and Sarah Crowley’s 4:40 would be new bike course records, but with the shortened bike course they won’t really count. (Adding in the eight minutes difference to last year they aren’t faster than the old records, 4:08 by Jan Frodeno and 4:44 by Natascha Badmann.) Similarly, both Sarah’s and Sebi’s overall times were faster than the existing course records from 2015 by Daniela Ryf and Jan.

The run was a bit slower than last year, but that was a fast year for Frankfurt. (Last year was relatively cold with some rain, while this year was sunny and hot.) We still saw a 2:40 run by Patrik Nilsson (I will count that as a new run course record), but no sub-3 hour runs on the female side.

Kona Qualifying Implications

With the “big points” in Frankfurt (and a number of athletes just needing a finish to qualify), there is a long list of athletes securing their Kona slots:

  • The top male Germans validated their slots by finishing at the front in Frankfurt: Sebastian Kienle secured his AQ slot as a previous champion by winning (and not letting anyone else get an AQ slot), while Andi Böcherer (second) and Patrick Lange (sixth) already had enough points for a slot from their great Kona races. On the female side an eight place was enough for Anja Beranek.
  • Sarah Crowley secured another AQ slot – nonetheless affecting the cutoff as all of the other athletes with a lot of points need a points slot.
  • The other top male finishers from Frankfurt also scored enough points to be safe: Patrik Nilsson (third), Ivan Tutukin (fifth), Marko Albert (seventh) and James Cunnama (fourth) can plan for October.
  • Giulio Molinari (ninth in Frankfurt) is now in the “Close” category, but there are still a number of athletes than can leap in front of him in the remaining races.
  • As on the men’s side the top female finishers from Frankfurt are now safe for a July slot: Michi Herlbauer (fifth), Liz Lyles (fourth), Lucy Charles (second), Alexandra Tondeur (third), Sonja Tajsich (sixth) and Dimity-Lee Duke (seventh).

Challenge Roth – Bike Checkin Gallery

Today all the Challenge Roth starters checked in their bikes in the first transition zone. All day it was hot and sunny – tomorrows conditions are expected to be similar, maybe with a chance for thunderstorm in the afternoon.

Bib Number 1 was one of the first athletes to check in. Timo Bracht will be racing his final Challenge Roth on Sunday, but it won’t be a farewell tour. “I don’t want to high-five people other than on the finish line” he said.

RothBike 1 Timo

The slight favorite appears to be Bib #3, Nils Frommhold. He won Challenge Roth 2015 and this season was already second at IM South Africa:

RothBike 3 Nils

Terence Boyzone is #5, he has been nursing a slight running injury and was hoping for a flat run – only to find out the new run course has quite a few ups and downs. He’s still optimistic for a good race tomorrow:

RothBike 5 Terenzo

Bart Aernouts is a bit further behind on the startlist – he races with bib #14. He’s happy to have his bike with him, it was lost for two days before finally showing up in Roth on late Thursday evening:

RothBike 14 Bart

Daniela Ryf (Bib 51) is the clear favorite on the female side, but she has also carried an injury that impacted her Roth prep. Even if she can’t chase Chrissie’s record, she should still be able to win comfortably:

RothBike F1 Daniela

RothBike F1a Daniela Bird

Heather Wurtele is racing with bib #52, her Cervelo P5X received some extra attention to properly fit in the bike racks:

RothBike F2 Heather

Yvonne Van Vlerken (bib #53) is a crowd favorite, this year she’s not quite sure what she can do having crashed three weeks before in Challenge Heilbronn and is still sporting bandages on both her elbows:

RothBike F3 Yvonne

Laura Siddall (#54) has made huge steps forward even after her fourth place in Roth last year. She’s been racing a lot but looks forward to have another crack at a fast time in Roth:

You can follow the race through Challenge Roth’s homepage, there is going to be live streams in German and English.

Kona Qualifying

There are a few athletes that will be looking to qualify for Kona in Lake Placid:

  • Brent McMahon had a disappointing DNF at IM Brasil but is still well placed for qualifying. A 5th place (720 points) should be enough for him to secure a slot, but he’ll be looking for more.
  • Matt Chrabot, Michael Weiss and Chris Leiferman would need at least a fourth place (960 points) for a slot.
  • TJ Tollakson also has a chance to qualify, he would need a second place (1600 points) or better.

Matt Russell and Andy Potts are already safe for Kona, they’ll mainly be racing for a good result and a win at Lake Placid.

Kona Qualifying Situation

There are a few athletes who need the KPR points from IM UK to secure their Kona slot:

  • Harry Wiltshire already has four races in his total, but he should be fine with a fifth or better.
  • Will Clarke was fourth at IM Texas, a sixth place would put him slightly above the projected cutoff threshold .. though I expect him to be racing for the win.
  • Kirill Kotshegarov and Romain Guillaume need at least a podium finish.
  • Nikki Bartlett needs a second place finish to get to the projected cutoff for the females.

Lucy Gossage is already safe for Kona (but has indicated she wouldn’t accept a slot), while Cyril Viennot, Mark Bowstead, Diana Riesler, Katja Koschak and Lucy Charles are on the UK list only as a backup in case IM Germany one week before does not go well.
