Challenge Roth 2017 (July 9th) – Seedings

ChallRothLogoThis year’s Roth races promise to be exciting: A strong men’s field with a number of potential winners, and a female field dominated by Daniela Ryf. Hopefully Daniela will be healthy and fit enough to try to make a go at Chrissie Wellington’s fastest time on the Ironman distance as she announced in May. I have written about some of her Advantages and Hurdles for Triathlete (“Can Ryf Break Wellington’s Iron-Distance World Record?“, check out the post here).

Ironman Germany 2017 (July 9th) – Seedings

IMGermanyLogoThe final Regional Championship race is coming up, known either as the Ironman European Championships, IM Germany or IM Frankfurt. It is the last race with “big points” for Kona. Most of the top seeds only need to “validate” their slots after a good Kona result, but a lot of athletes have raced earlier in the season but without the result they were looking for, so most of the field is hoping for a lot of points to be able to qualify for Kona.

Kona Qualifying Situation

As IM Germany is a Regional Championship and there are Automatic Qualifier spots for the winners, every participant has a chance to qualify for Kona. Also the P-4000 race has a lot of KPR points so there are a lot of athletes that should be able to qualify even without winning the race. Here are the minimum finishes to get close to the cutoffs for most of the participants.

Male Race Participants

The male cutoff for July is projected to be around 3.500 points. With 3.780 Thiago Vinhal is already in a good position to qualify, I’d be surprised to see him racing.

  • Just finish to validate: Sebastian Kienle, Andi Böcherer, Patrick Lange
  • 10th or better (at least 685 points): Marko Albert
  • 8th (1070 points) or better: Cyril Viennot, Daniil Sapunov, Mark Bowstead
  • 6th (1670 points) or better: Ivan Tutukin, Giulio Molinari, Patrik Nilsson, Nick Baldwin, Carlos Diaz, Michael Raelert
  • 5th (2090 points) or better: James Cunnama, Cameron Wurf, Markus Fachbach, Philip Graves, Jeff Symonds
A podium finish (3rd place is 2.890 points) should be enough for Esben Hovgaard, Ivan Risti, Michael Ruenz, Trevor Delsaut, Bas Diederen, Phillip Koutny, and Peru Alfaro – the list gets almost too long to mention!

Female Race Participants

The female cutoff is likely to be around 4.300 points. Sarah Crowley (winner of IM Cairns) is already safe for Kona, but she indicated that she wants to try the “double” and see how she handles racing two Ironman so close together.

  • Just finish to validate: Anja Beranek
  • 12th (385 points) or better: Michi Herlbauer (though she’s likely racing IM Austria a week before)
  • 11th (515 points) or better: Liz Lyles
  • 10th (685 points) or better: Dimity-Lee Duke
  • 8th (1070 points) or better: Katharina Grohmann, Sonja Tajsich
  • 7th (1335 points) or better: Diana Riesler
  • 6th (1670 points) or better: Corinne Abraham
  • 5th (2090 points) or better: Lisi Gruber, Alexandra Tondeur, Pamela Tastets, Shiao-Yu Li
  • 4th (2455 points) or better: Katja Konschak, Lucy Charles, Magali Tisseyre

Winning Odds

Male Race Participants

Of course, reigning Kona Champion Jan Frodeno is the clear favorite to win, but a 25% Kona strength shows that he faces a good, strong field. A number of other athletes – most notably Ivan Rana who won in 2014 – have also shown that they can go crazy fast on this course:

  • Jan Frodeno: 58% (1-1)
  • Ivan Rana: 15% (6-1)
  • Viktor Zyemtsev: 11% (8-1)
  • Stefan Schmid: 5% (21-1)

Female Race Participants

Based on the previous results Eva Wutti is the favorite, but this will be her first big race after the birth of her daughter and she has also been hit by a car while training on the bike and it’s unclear how strong she’ll be able to race.

  • Eva Wutti: 47% (1-1)
  • Michaela Herlbauer: 17% (5-1)
  • Diana Riesler: 13% (7-1)
  • Michelle Vesterby: 11% (8-1)
  • Corinne Abraham: 9% (10-1)

Ironman Boulder 2017 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

This was only the second time that IM Boulder had Pros racing the course. The first time was in 2014 and apparently the course underwent a lot of changes since then. Even with that, the general conditions are comparable as the race is still held in June and at altitude. The bike course continues to be relatively fast (adjustment of 11:52), but overall the race was quite slow (adjustment of -4:27). This is caused by a very slow run course (adjustment -8:35, almost the same as in 2014) – probably the altitude makes this very hard to run fast and also causing a number of explosions.

As noted above the 2014 course was different from this year, but almost all “course records” were broken this year. Tim O’Donnell had the fastest times in all three legs and overall, he now holds all the male records. On the female side Heather Jackson has the new bike course record while Rachel Joyce took the run and overall records. The only time from 2014 that still stands is Laura Bennett’s swim time.

Male Race Results

There was never a doubt that Tim O’Donnell was out to win the race – he took the lead during the swim and was extending his lead all day with the fastest times in all three legs. What a dominating performance and a good indicator that Tim will be an athlete to reckon with in Kona.

2014 Champion Justin Darr was second across the line but after the race he was DQ’d for course cutting (even if unintentionally and by just a few hundred meters, see Justin’s blog for more details). Matt Chrabot with a good race across the board took second place, and Patrick Mckeon took the last podium spot in his first Pro Ironman race. Jarrod Shoemaker had the best relative performance of the day to finish in fourth.

Female Race Results

As expected Kelly Williamson was first out of the water but then fell back on the bike, still finishing in fourth with a good marathon. Rachel Joyce was just a few seconds behind Kelly in T1 and took over the lead for most of the bike. Heather Jackson had the fastest bike ride and able to close the gap to Rachel. By T2 Heather had built a lead of three minutes, but Rachel refused to cede the race to her and slowly started to eat into the lead. When Rachel took the lead in the second half of the marathon she quickly created a gap and eventually won her return to Ironman racing by seven minutes. Heather finished in second place, more than 20 minutes ahead of 2014 winner Danielle Mack in third place.

Kona Qualifying Implications

There are not too many changes for Kona Qualifying: Only Heather Jackson and Tim O’Donnell are now safe for a July slot – after their great results in Kona they just needed a validation finish.
