Ironman Florida 2013 – Analysing Results

Race Conditions

Conditions in Florida were crazy fast this year, the adjustment of 28:36 was by far the fastest we’ve seen this year, and only the first edition of IM Sweden in 2012 (with a short run course) ever had a larger adjustment.

The swim was traditionally slower (and conditions looked pretty rough), while the bike accounts for most of the overall adjustment. However, the bike was just a little bit slower than last year (consistent with the difference of 4:04 to 4:02 from Andy Starykowicz. The main difference to last year was that the run was also quite fast. I don’t know if there were changes in the run course compared to last year, but the conditions also sounded pretty favourable for fast times.

Male Race Results

Even with the fast conditions, the results were pretty amazing. Only three weeks after Kona, Andy Starykowicz managed to improve the fastest bike time in an Ironman, and followed it up with a sub-3h marathon and the first sub-8h result by a US athlete. This wasn’t enough for the win, however, as Victor Del Corral ran a 2:37 marathon and finished in 7:53, the fastest time ever in a North American Ironman. Behind these two, Filip Osapaly’s debut IM pales a bit, though he also finished sub-8. A lot of other athletes also posted new IM PRs.

Female Race Results

Mirinda Carfrae made it clear that she was only in Florida to validate her Kona spot (which she did in a leisurely – for her! – 9:48). The clear race favourite was Yvonne Van Vlerken, even if she had just raced Kona. She delivered a strong performance, posting an 8:43, a new personal best over the IM distance. (Adjusting for race conditions, her Kona performance was even better.) Coming off the bike with Lisa Huetthaler, she quickly took control of the run. She can enjoy a long break now, being assured of a safe Kona spot.

Ashley Clifford was the surprising 2nd finisher – she managed to improve on her great 3rd place from last year, following a much improved bike ride with the only sub-3 marathon in the women’s field, and also finishing sub-9. Erika Csomor rounded out the podium in 3rd place.

IM Florida 2013 – Possible Changes to the Start List

The Athlete Tracker for Ironman Florida has been populated. There have been no last minute additions. However, the following athletes are not showing up – usually this means that they have not picked up their bibs and will not start:

  • Amorelli, Igor (bib 74)
  • Bardi, David (22)
  • Bockel, Dirk (3)
  • Borba, Ana Lidia (107)
  • Bryden, Jordan (68)
  • Hemet, Nicolas (38)
  • Keat, Rebekah (116)
  • Kemp, Christian (65)
  • Kleinl, Martin (14)
  • Lemeseva, Maria (104)
  • Louys, Michael (56)
  • Lubinski, Jim (48)
  • Moberg, Lennart (59)
  • Mosley, Philip (21)
  • Mueller, Daniel (30)
  • Nikitin, Evgeniy (49)
  • Plese, David (76)
  • Ressler, Markus (10)
  • Sandos, Robin (101)
  • Shearon, Jonathan (61)
  • Sheeks, Matthew (24)
  • Sullivan, Sean (15)
  • Vabrousek, Petr (67)
  • Vinhal, Thiago (31)
  • Wade, Robbie (71)
  • Williams, Darrel (54)
  • Wyss, Manuel (55)
  • Young, Dantley (16)

Some of these names are a bit surprising (for example, Rebekah Keat just races a 70.3 as a prep for Florida), and they may still be racing on Saturday.

Xena leaving TeamTBB – Translation of an NZZ interview

Caroline Steffen (nicknamed “Xena”) described her future plans in an interview with NZZ:

XenaTweet

The „Neue Zürcher Zeitung“ (or NZZ for short) is a respectable Swiss newspaper (some more info about NZZ on wikipedia). As the tweet and the interview were published in German, it seems that the interesting points have not been picked up by the mainly English speaking triathlon press. Here is a quick translation of the main points.

Kona 2013

Q: [What happened in Kona?] You started as the favourite and finished 5th.

A: Everything went bad. I don’t know why. I have to take some time to analyse the race.

Q: After the swim you were in the lead group on the bike. Then you had stomach problems.

A: I vomited multiple times on the second half of the bike and also on the run. I don’t know why. Some other top athletes were affected as well. Maybe we picked up something from the ocean? I don’t know.

Q: So you don’t believe it was because of nutrition problem? After all you didn’t get your special needs bag with your own drink after 90k on the bike.

A: That’s right, but it’s not important. In an Ironman, there are 2000 athletes who want to get their special needs, and it’s normal if things go wrong. I don’t rely on it and always have a plan B.

Q: What’s your plan B in this situation?

A: To use the drink that is supplied by the race organisers. I’ll try it in training to be safe. Of course my own mix would have been ideal, but what else could I do? Stop? I was in the lead group, so that was impossible. Turning around? I don’t know if that would have been legal.

Q: You felt better towards the end of the marathon, overtook some others and finished fifth. What would have been possible without the stomach problems?

A: Second or third, but certainly not winning. Mirinda Carfrae was unbeatable on race day, just look at her marathon time  2:50, faster than the men’s winner.

Plans for 2014

Q: You are 35. How much more time do you give yourself for the big goal of winning Kona?

A: Two years.

Q: Are you going to change anything for next season?

A: I will no longer start for Team TBB but under my own name. I’ll have better opportunities to acquire sponsors. I’m in the middle of negotiations.

Q: Will you also leave TBB-coach Brett Sutton?

A: At the moment, I can’t say anything to that.

Updated Top 10 and Course Ratings

After Ironman Hawaii, I’ve updated my Top 10 Ratings and Course Ratings (in the menu bar). Here’s a short overview of the main changes in the Top10:

TOP 10 Rated Male Athletes

Almost all of the top-rated athletes are falling back a bit. With Crowie falling back to #3 after his disappointing Kona result, Andreas Raelert is again the only athlete in the #1 spot – but he hasn’t really claimed the top spot. The main person moving up the ranks is Frederik Van Lierde, he was 12th at the end of 2012 and is now tied for 6th.

10 David Dellow AUS 08:26:20 IM Germany on 2013-07-07 5

TOP 10 Rated Female Athletes

For the lasts year my assessment was that Rinny had “inherited” the top spot after Chrissie’s retirement, but her fantastic Kona result made it clear that she has absolutely earned it by now. Yvonne and Rachel continue to move up in the ranks, with Caroline between them. New additions to the Top10 are British athletes Jodie Swallow and Liz Blatchford, with Julia Gajer (dropping to 17th after Wales) and Sonja Tajsich (dropping to 11th) they have ousted two German athletes.
