Ironman Austria 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

Last year was a bit of an aberration for Austria: An adjustment of 6:58 was way slower than the course rating of 14:25. This year, everything was back to normal: An adjustment of 23:17 is a clear indication of a quick course. The bike was pretty typical (probably on a slightly short course), but the swim and run were a lot faster than last year.

Male Race Results

Andreas Raelert won the race on the run, posting the first sub-8h result of this racing year. However, with the fast course his time was still slower than his rating would have predicted. (Still, I think that this result shows he is on form for Kona without ruining his October race in the summer – and the fast run split is also very encouraging for Kona.) The performance of the day has to be Maik Twelsiek’s second place: After a strong swim and bike he posted a run PR, resulting also in an Ironman PR.

All of the Top 5 in the women’s race will be happy with their results. Erika Csomor finally managed to win in Austria, extend her winning steak to three and posted another sub-9h result. Asa, Eimear, Sarah and Camilla all had great races finishing with strong run times.

IM France 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

With both Frederik and Mary Beth posting new course records (and Bart Aernouts posting one of the fastest IM marathon times ever), it appears that the conditions were pretty good. However, this is not backed up by the data: An overall adjustment of 6:05 is pretty much in line with the new course rating of 5:44. Digging a bit further, the run was pretty quick. As we’ve had some other years with fast run times and IM France is an established race, I assume that the fast runs were aided by good conditions and were not caused by a short course. My summary of my analysis: The conditions themselves were not fast, but they aided quick times.

Male Race Results

Frederik and Bart both broke the old course record while posting very fast marathon times:

Female Race Results

Mary Beth also improved the course record and continued her streak of being unbeaten in an IM outside of Kona. Even though breaking the course record, she was still racing a bit slower than her rating would have indicated. Part of this can be explained by a crash on the bike and a flat tire, but it also seems that she did not have to spend all her matches in qualifying and has some left for the big race in Kona:

Rank Name Nation Swim Bike Run Actual Time Expected Time
1 Mary Beth Ellis USA 00:51:22 05:11:40 03:04:06 09:12:54 09:09:06
2 Jeanne Collonge FRA 00:55:40 05:17:38 03:00:51 09:20:51 09:55:57

5 Lucie Reed CZE 00:51:29 05:33:45 03:26:40 09:57:44 09:28:44

IM France was paying eight deep, but only had five ladies starting and finishing which is a bit of surprise with the fields in Austria and Frankfurt being much larger.

Race Conditions

The conditions in CdA were pretty normal: Relatively slow swim (in a cold mountain lake), and average bike and run times. The adjustment was 1:06, leading to a new course rating of 2:41.

Female Race Results

Heather Wurtele battled the demons of her DQ from last year all day when her bike broke down and she continued on another competitor’s bike (which was way too small for her). She had a flat and was stopped by a non-race-related emergency, but held on to win in convincing fashion and in a new course record time (beating the old course record from Julie Dibens). Cait Snow again posted the fastest run time and agin managed to run herself into second place:
