Challenge Roth 2023 – Analyzing Results

Challenge Roth is always a fast course, and this year was even faster than normal. The weather contributed a good part – the swim was wetsuit-legal (compared to last year’s non-wetsuit swim about three minutes quicker), then a fast bike with very little wind followed by a quick run. Compared to other years, the number of motor cycles on the course was much reduced, and it was probably the most fair edition of Roth in recent years.

There were a number of world bests set in Roth today. Magnus Ditlev posted a 3:57 bike split, to me the fastest ever time ever in a legit race. Magnus followed that uo with a 2:37 run to finish in an amazing time of 7:24:40, also a new fastest legitimate full-distance finish. (My post on “IM Records” will be updated in the next days.) Patrick Lange finished second with a 2:30 run, a few seconds quicker than his run in Israel.

It was also a record-setting day for the women. Daniela Ryf biked a 4:22, more than four minutes quicker than the old “world best” posted by her in Kona 2018. As she was also able to run a new marathon PR, she set a new females fastest time of 8:08, chopping a full ten minutes off the 12-year-old record from Chrissie Wellington (also set in Roth).

It was great to see the old record holders, Chrissie Wellington and Jan Frodeno, put the finisher’s medals on the new record holders, Daniela Ryf and Magnus Ditlev.

Ironman Cairns 2023 – Analyzing Results

Conditions were a bit slower than in earlier years – about three minutes on the bike and two minutes on the run. With a faster swim, the overall times were about 3 and a half minutes slower. Nonetheless, we’ve seen a few new course records. Kylie Simpson posted new bike and run records (beating the old records by Sarah Crowley from 2022 and her own marathon record from 2021), she also set a new overall course record, beating Teresa Adams’ time from 2019. On the men’s side, Braden Currie set a new run course record, improving his own time from 2018.

Nice and Kona Qualifying

As a Regional Championship, Cairns offered four slots for each gender. As there were a number of athletes already qualified, these rolled down quite a lot, there must also have been a few declines and the last female slot wasn’t filled The slots were awarded to 

  • Ben Philipps (6th), Matt Burton (7th), Tuam Chun Chang (8th), Nathan Dorfmann (10th)
    for the men (Nice) and
  • Kate Gillespie-Jones (5th), Laura Brown (7th), and Sarah Thomas (8th)
    for the women (Kona).
