Ironman Copenhagen 2021 – Analyzing Results

IMCPHCourse Conditions

This year was another super-quick race in Copenhagen – the Top 7 finished under 8 hours, the second highest number of sub-8s behind Tulsa 2021. There were a good number of course records as well: Winner Cam Wurf posted a new overall record (beating the old record by Patrik Nilsson by more than three minutes) and also a new bike course record (his 4:02 broke the 2016 record by Andy Raelert by more than ten minutes). Cam also set a new fastest time for Australia and the continent of Oceania. Before that, there was also a new  swim course record by Lukasz Wojt, erasing the 2011 mark by Stephen Bayliss. The last new record from Copenhagen I’m aware of: Henrik Goesch set a new fastest time for Finland, improving Pauli Kiuru’s time from Roth 1991.

Kona Qualifying

IM Copenhagen offered two Kona Pro slots, these go to:

  • Lionel Sanders
    and
  • Henrik Goesch.

Race winner Cam Wurf was already qualified (he won IM Italy in September 2019). With the current qualifying rules, these were the last male Kona Pro qualifiers for the February race. The last qualifying race for the female Pros is IM Hamburg next week. The full list of qualifiers can be found here.

Ironman Germany 2021 – Analyzing Results

IMFra_LogoCourse Conditions

Compared to last year’s heatwave (with all-time record temperatures for Frankfurt), this year was mild – but with 30°C it was still quite warm for Germany. This lead to faster conditions that last year (by roughly 14 minutes, 4 on the bike and 10 on the run), even if the slightly longer bike course (small changes because of construction – numbers quoted before the race were between 182.6k and 184k) and the heat still led to “slow” conditions for Frankfurt. No course records were broken – maybe Patrik could have sped up a bit in the last k by not celebrating quite as much – in the end he was just 33 seconds over the run course record still held by Jan Frodeno. Still, it was only the second time we’ve seen a sub-2:40 marathon in Frankfurt.

Kona Slots

As the European Championships, there were three Kona Pro slots available. These will go to:

  • Patrik Nilsson,
  • David McNamee,
    and
  • Pieter Heemeryck.

Second place finisher Kristian Høgenhaug was already qualified with his 4th place in Lanzarote. You can find all Kona qualifiers here.

IM Finland 2021 – Analyzing Results

Logo IMFINCourse Conditions

This was the first edition of IM Finland. With an adjustment of 11:15 the course was about as quick as IM New Zealand and a little bit slower than the “old home” of the European Championships in Frankfurt. The bike leg create most of the quickness, and there was quite a bit of rain on the run creating at least not very pleasant conditions. After crossing the finish line, all three podium finishers quickly changed into dry and warmer clothing.

Kona Qualifying

As the European Championships, IM Finland offered 3 Kona slots for the female Pros. These go to:

  • Laura Philipp
  • Jocelyn McCauley
  • Imogen Simmonds

All three were happy to secure their slots and are already looking forward to race Kona in October.

The full list of Kona qualifiers can be found here.

The Collins Cup 2021 (Aug 28th) – Team List

The first edition of the Collins Cup will be held on August 28th in Samorin. The Collins Cup will be a team event, in 12 matches one athlete from each of the three teams will race each other. The winner of each match scores 3 points, 2nd place 2 points and 1 point for 3rd, plus some bonus points for being far ahead. The winner of the Collins Cup will be the team that scores the most points in each of the matches.

Course details have not been announced yet, for now I have listed athletes with their course-neutral “70.3 Ratings”. But the distances are expected to be 2k swim, 80k bike and 18k run, so the times will be considerably faster than below. I plan to update the expected times closer to the race.

Updates:

  • August 24th: The US had some last minutes changes, Heather Jackson has been replaced by Jocelyn McCauley and Chris Leiferman by Andrew Starykowicz.
