Challenge Almere 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

Based on a quick glance at last year’s results (when Almere was still an “independent” race), I expected a quick course. This turned out not to be the case: With an adjustment of 4:41, Almere was about as fast as New Zealand or the old IM Canada course.  There were not a lot of Pros racing (and quite a lot racing here for the first time as a Pro), so next year will give a better indication if 2013 was a typical race for Almere.

Update: Apparently the course changed significantly from 2012. I got some feedback that there was a lot of rain and wind. (Thanks to Dylan McNeice, Alistair Lang and Neil McLoughlin.) Some people also report both the bike and run to be long.

IM Lake Tahoe 2013 – Predictions

This is the first race on this course. One of the big questions is how much influence the altitude is going to have (Lake Tahoe is at about 6.000 feet and higher or 2000 meters). Alan Couzens has an interesting article on the impact of altitude, his best guess seems to be 10% (+/-5%). At about 9 hours, that would make Tahoe between 25 and 80 minutes slower than a race at sea level.

IM Lake Tahoe has 2000 KPR points for the winner. It has a total price purse of 75k$.

Male Race Participants

There are a number of athletes on the list that have recently raced: Joe has raced the 70.3 championship in Las Vegas, Maik has just won Wisconsin, Michael has placed 3rd in Wales, Thomas had a DNF in Wisconsin and was thinking of taking some more rest before Kona. The first version of the last was missing some athletes that I know wanted to race, they have now been added. (Thanks to Romain Guillaume for sending me an updated start list.) I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some more changes to the field in the days before the race.

IM Wisconsin 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

As usual, IM Wisconsin was relatively slow (adjustment of -0:25). The slowest leg this year was the swim (adjustment of -3:34), and I’ve heard a number of reports indicating a windy, choppy swim.

Male Race Results

Maik Twelsiek won the race with a performance that was typical for him: Close to the front on the swim, followed by a very strong bike (12 minutes faster than any other finisher). He was then able to hold on to the lead with a solid 3:06 run. He was followed by Daniel Bretscher (posting a good run) and Eliot Holtham (being almost an hour faster than expected).

Female Race Results

Whereas most of the top men were able to beat their expected times, a lot of the women struggled a bit. Jackie Arendt managed to post a good run (relative to her previous results) and win the race. She was followed by Beth Shutt (also with a solid run) and Malaika Homo who had to settle for third after the best bike leg and leading in T2.

Challenge Henley 2013 – Analyzing Results

Course Conditions

This year was a bit slower than what is normal in Henley: An adjustment of -3:48 compared to a new course rating of 1:01. Most of this is caused by a relatively slow bike of-7:04.

Male Race Results

After a disappointing season so far, Tom Lowe managed to win in Henley with a very solid time. After a typically slow swim, he posted the race’s best bike and run legs:

IM Wales 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

IM Wales 2013 highlighted the fact that Wales is the slowest of the current IM-distance courses. I calculated an adjustment of -30:06, leading to a new course rating of -20:21. The bike was just a little bit slower than last year (-27:31 adjustment vs. -22:18), the main difference to last year was the run which was very fast last year (adjustment of 21:07), and “normal” this year (-2:01). There was some talk about the run course being “intentionally short” in order to compensate for the long run from the swim exit to T1. Based on the times, I would say that the run course had pretty much the right length this year.

Male Race Results

Scott Neyedli won another Ironman (this time as a “working athlete”). He was in the front group after the swim, then pulled away on the bike (posting the best bike split at 5:11) and also had a very fast run. His victory was never in doubt during the run. Marek Jaskolka was able to hold on to his good position after the swim and came in second with a solid bike and run. The third spot on the podium was taken by Michael Goehner, who had to make up a lot of time on the run.

Female Race Results

After winning in the UK, Lucy Gossage also won the “other” British Ironman. She took control of the race on the bike and never was in any danger. Last year’s winner Regula Rohrbach tried to stay with her as long as possible but didn’t stand a chance on the run. Katja Konschak had the best run, but was too far back after the bike for a better spot.

Julia Gajer struggled a bit on her “first” Ironman race. Before, she raced Challenge Roth three times under 9 hours, but moving from one of the fastest courses (Roth with an adjustment of 18:29) to the slowest (IM Wales at -20:21) proved to be a challenge for her. (It just goes to show what a large influence the course plays). Update: As Jo Carritt indicated in her comment on this post, my initial comment was unfair to Julia. I’ve confirmed that Julia had two flats, couldn’t fix the second one and had to wait for tech support. By then she was freezing cold and probably had to fight to even finish. I hope she’ll have better luck in her next race and that she’s going to be able to race at her Roth level!
