Military Division at Ironman Hawaii

Introduction

This section has been written by Staff Seargent Bradley T. Williams who has served in the Air Force from 2004 to 2014 before becoming a Professional triathlete. If you have any further information or official results from the years that we are missing, please contact Brad or me so we can update this information.

IRONMAN has a long history and connection with the military, dating all the way back to the first IRONMAN in 1978. It all started with Naval Commander John Collins coming up with the first IRONMAN distance race, which was then won by a Navy Communications Specialist, Gordon Haller. Since then the military has had strong ties to the sport of triathlon and IRONMAN.

From the research that we have done the Military Category has existed since as early as 1996 at the IRONMAN World Championships. For the longest time that division was for US service members only, 2015 marked the first year that the division was opened up to military members from around the world. From 1996 to 2013 the slot allocation system changed throughout the years. At one point each service branch (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy) were given slots by IRONMAN and they allocated them to their athletes. The number of slots decreased over the years, from as high as five men and three women per service branch all the way down to where it was one male and one female slot in 2013.

In 2014 there was not an “official qualification” process, but there was still a military division. You had to qualify outright, just like any other athlete to compete in the division, and also had to prove military service and possibly endorsement from your country/branch of service. Right around the time of the 70.3 World Championships in 2014, IRONMAN announced the new military division and plans for it. The first qualifying race with military only slots was to be held at Superfrog 70.3, which was only a few weeks before. There were 20 slots allocated to the military athletes racing in 2014.

Since 2014 select races have been set as military qualifying events, usually two to three per year. Since the inception of the program Superfrog 70.3, Bahrain 70.3, Wiesbaden 70.3, and IRONMAN Cairns have all had slots. We are unsure of what races had IRONMAN World Championship slots for 2018 other than Superfrog 70.3, which has 15 total slots.

Previous Kona Results by the 2018 Participants

This post looks at the previous Kona results by the 2018 Pro field.

A few observations:

  • Ronnie Schildknecht has the longest active Kona streak and the most Kona starts in the current field, he’s been racing Kona since 2006 (12 races).
  • Cam Brown has been racing even longer – his first race was in 2000! He also has 12 starts in Kona.
  • On the female side, Linsey Corbin has the most starts. She also the most finished in the whole Pro field (10 finishes out of 11 starts).
  • With 9 finishes, Luke McKenzie and Andy Potts have the most finishes on the male side.
  • The longest active streak on the female side is by Michelle Vesterby, she has been racing the last six races in Kona.

Always Up-to-date Kona 2018 Startlist

2018 Kona Rating Report Title ThumbAfter all Kona Pro slots have been finalized (including all rolldowns for the August slots), here is the preliminary start list for Kona 2018. I will update this list if any more slots are declined or athletes announce that they won’t start. I will also update the list once Ironman assigns bib numbers. For now the lists are sorted in alphabetical order.

Update Oct 4th: Ben Hoffman won’t be racing.

Update Oct 3rd: The official bib numbers have been released by Ironman and the tables below have been updated.

Update Oct 2nd: Boris Stein has announced his withdrawal.

Update Sept 30th: Mel Hauschild won’t be able to race.

Update Sept 27th: Terenzo Bozzone was forced to withdraw.

Update Sept 25th: Annabel Luxford has posted that she won’t be able to race (details in “Injury List” at the bottom).

Update Sept 22nd: Angela Naeth is a late addition after the results from IM Netherlands have been updated (details in my IM Netherlands results post).

Injury List

In early July, Terenzo Bozzone was in an accident and severely injured. He’s had surgery to repair a broken cheekbone and by early August is slowly easing back into training. He has accepted his July slot, and he has posted on his Instagram feed that he’s working hard to be on the Kona start line. Unfortunately, Terenzo announced on September 27th in an Instagram post that he won’t be able to race because his body “isn’t quite ready to compete at the level necessary and a level that would reflect the respect I have for the event and the competitors”.

On September 12th, Jan Frodeno announced on Instagram that he’s suffered a stress fracture in his hip and won’t be able to race Kona this year.

On September 23rd Helle Frederiksen posted on Instagram that she’s struggling with an inflammation in her left foot and hasn’t been able to run for two weeks. She still has three weeks and will travel to Kona, hoping to be able to start the race and go for a podium finish.

On September 25th Annabel Luxford posted on Instagram that she won’t be racing Kona after struggling with respiratory infections and asthma for six months.

On September 30th Mel Hauschildt posted on Instagram that she will need surgery on her right leg for Endofibrosis and is out of Kona.

On October 2nd Boris Stein posted that his body needs some more time after his accident in Nice to make it pain-free and in good shape to the starting line and that he will fly back home to Germany after his training camp in Texas.

When the bib list was released by Ironman on October 3rd, Nick Kastelein was missing from the list even though qualified. Apparently he is still dealing with the running injury that also kept him from racing at the 70.3 World Championships.

On October 4th Ben Hoffman announced in an Instagram post that he has suffered a sacral stress fracture and won’t be racing Kona.
