Ironman Switzerland 2018 – Analyzing Results

IMSUI_LogoCourse Conditions

As usual, IM Switzerland was relatively slow (overall adjustment of 3:36 compared to a course rating of 5;37). This year, however, the conditions seemed to be conducive to a fast bike (adjustment of 9:03 with a bike course rating of 5:41).

A number of course records were set: Jan Van Berkel set a new overall course record of 8:09:18, improving Ronnie Schildknecht’s 8:12 from 2010. Cameron Wurf set a new bike course record (4:14, erasing the 2006 time by Stefan Riesen), and Lisa Roberts exactly matched the run course record by Kristin Moeller from 2014.

Kona Qualifying Implications

After Zürich, the following athletes are safe for a Kona slot:

  • Annabel Luxford (just needed a finish)
  • Jan van Berkel
  • Mike Phillips
  • David Please

Ronnie Schildknecht is also likely to receive a July slot, however he can still be overtaken by athletes racing in Whistler.

Before the race, Kaisa Sali, Lisa Roberts and Cameron Wurf were already safe.

Kona Qualifying

There is a couple of athletes on the start lists that are already safe for Kona: Cameron Wurf, Ruedi Wild, Kaisa Sali, and Lisa Roberts. At least some of them will still toe the line in Zürich.

A number of other athletes look for points to secure their slot, here is what they’ll need to get above the projected cutoffs:

  • Just finish: Annabel Luxford
  • 7th or better: Melanie Burke
  • 6th or better: Mike Phillips, Jan van Berkel, Philipp Koutny
  • 4th or better: Jeremy Jurkiewicz, Ronnie Schildknecht, Sara Svensk
  • 2nd or better: David Plese, Miguel Blanchard
  • Win: Johann Ackermann, Sven Riederer

The final slot allocation will be getting close with the last few races, with the results above the athletes at least have a chance (even if not a guarantee) for a slot. For more details, check my blog post analyzing July qualifying.

Kona Qualifying

There are a few athletes looking for a Kona slot:

  • Cemaron Wurf is already safe, his summer racing plans are pretty flexible for now.
  • Jan van Berkel is already pretty close, to improve his score he needs a 7th or better.
  • Ronnie Schildknecht has four races in his total, so he’ll need a fourth place or better .. but he’s probably more focused in winning his home race for the tenth(!) time.
  • Annabel Luxford has enough points but needs an Ironman finish.
  • Lisa Roberts (also racing IM France) just needs a few more points, a seventh place should be enough for her.
  • Sara Svensk is on a number of entry lists, she’ll need a podium for a slot.

Ironman Switzerland 2017 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

Conditions in Zürich were very similar to previous years, all legs were pretty close to the course ratings. Some athletes posted quick times in the individual legs (Celine was just 22 seconds off her swim course record, Cameron within five minutes off the bike course record) and overall records (Nick ended up just 48 seconds slower than Ronnie in 2010, the second fastest time ever in Zürich), but no new records were set this year.

Male Race Results

SUI_Nick

Nick Kastelein had a great race in Zürich: He posted the second fastest times on the swim, bike an run, resulting in the second fastest time ever at IM Zürich and convincing win. Cameron Wurf seemed to be intent to close the small gap to him after the swim, but never managed to catch up to him. He still had a lead of one minutes into T2 and then quickly built that to seven minutes at the finish. Second place went to Ruedi Wild who had the fastest marathon of the day. Jan Van Berkel ran a smart race: He was in close proximity to 9-time-winner Ronnie Schildknecht for most of the bike, and secured third place with a solid sub-3 marathon when Ronnie had to DNF with a strained muscle. With Samuel Huerzeler another Swiss finished in fourth, while Daniel Fontana climbed from 8th in T2 into fifth at the finish, securing a Kona slot. Daniil Sapunov in sixth and Cameron Wurf in seventh place missed the second place they would have needed for a Kona slot.

Female Race Results

Celine Schwerer won IM Switzerland, leading from wire to wire: She was leading after the swim by five minutes, then had a good bike ride leading by almost eight minutes in T2, then also had the best run to win by almost fifteen minutes in the end. She won her first Ironman and also secured a July Kona slot.
