Ironman Coeur d’Alene 2014 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

Conditions in Coeur d’Alene were pretty fast for the course: An adjustment of 8:04 is the fastest I’ve seen here (new course rating of 1:56). Conditions were slow as normal on the swim and bike, the changes in the bike course don’t seem to have changed times too much. This year however, the run times were pretty quick (adjustment of 6:53 with a new run rating of 2:20). 

Male Race Results

Andy Potts delivered his usual strong summer Ironman, and his win was never in doubt. Victor Zyemtsev – always strong in CdA – was second with a good run, and defending champion Ben Hoffmann took third with a 2:43 marathon after an uncharacteristically slow bike.

Female Race Results

Heather Wurtele took control of the race with the fastest bike split, and ended the day with a strong 3:09 marathon – winning by more than 15 minutes. Kelly Williamson never really got going on the day, still finishing second and making sure to get enough KPR points. Jessica Smith took third – she was the one with the best performance compared to her expected time.

Ironman France 2014 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

With an adjustment of 2:42, it was a pretty slow year for France. Apparently, the rainy conditions hurt all three disciplines, and especially the bike was very slow with an adjustment of -5:17 (apparently a lot of athletes crashed in rainy conditions on the descents in the second half of the race). Even though we saw Victor Del Corral running a 2:42 and the three top women posting sub-3h marathons, the run was also slower than last year (4:17 adjustment vs. 10:00 last year). 

Male Race Results

Bart Aernouts won his first Ironman race with solid times across all three legs. As usual, Victor Del Corral had the fastest run leg, and Ty Butterfield took the last spot on the podium.

Female Race Results

The fastest bike leg enabled Tine Deckers to repeat her 2012 win. Super-runner Caitlin Snow made things interesting in the second half of the run as she closed the distance to Tine down to 39 seconds. Lisa Roberts had a solid race across all disciplines and finished third.

Ironman Austria 2014 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

Austria continues to be one of the fastest courses on the calendar, an adjustment of 25:24 leads to a new course rating of 19:32. Conditions were very similar to last year – a fast bike (adjustment of 10:40) followed by a similarly fast run (adjustment of 8:03). 

Male Race Results

Ivan Rana put down the foot on the bike with a 4:15 split, and followed it up with an equally impressive 2:43 run. The rest of the podium was a bit of a surprise with Christian Kramer and David Plese posting some more fast runs.

Female Race Results

After erasing the swim deficit on the bike, Linsey Corbin’s win was never in doubt after she moved away from her competitors early in the run and posted a new course record. The first five of the women finished in sub-9, with Simone Brändli and Lisa Hütthaler taking up the remaining podium spots.

Male Race Participants

As usual, IM Germany has a stellar field. Based on previous results, Freddie Van Lierde is my favorite. However, the race will be very interesting with the mix of experienced athletes probably focused more on Kona (Freddie, Sebastian Kienle), athletes moving up to the full distance (Jan Frodeno), athletes coming back from not so good results (Andreas Raelert, Ronnie Schildknecht, Jens Petersen-Bach) and those probably fully focused on Frankfurt (Jan Raphael and most of the other Germans). Almost impossible to predict what is going to happen!

Female Race Participants

The female race also has an amazing depth of talent, but is probably a bit easier to foresee than the men’s. Mary Beth Ellis and Jodie Swallow are always solid and at the front of the race. Last year’s winner Camilla Pedersen is back to defend her title – she’s had a tumultuous year with a bike crash, induced coma, an amazing recovery and successful 70.3 races in the spring. It’s hard to say what she’ll be able to do over the full distance. Then there are Eva Wutti (who needs a good result after a DNF in Texas), and a lot of German (Sonja Tajsich, Kristin Möller) and international athletes (Elizabeth Lyles, Gina Crawford). There are a few athletes on the list that are probably DNS – Annabel Luxford is injured, and Simone Braendli and Cait Snow have entered Frankfurt only as a back-up option if their primary IMs in Austria and France don’t go so well.
