Race Conditions

With IM Lake Tahoe, WTC is trying to establish another North American Ironman race. From what I’ve heard, the setting is really beautiful, but in the last few days before the race there was a lot of chatter about the weather. Apparently, the night before the race it was snowing and there were freezing temperatures. The race went on as planned, and other than the need to put on some extra clothes after the swim conditions were cold but okay on race day.

The swim was cold but not all that slow, and adjustment of -2:41 is similar to what we see in Wisconsin. A lot of age groupers were shaking after the swim, but I haven’t heard any horror stories from the Pros. Pros are usually a bit reluctant to bundle up for the bike and can easily run into hypothermia issues, but a lot of them were putting on bike jackets, leg warmers and even full gloves. This may have contributed to a slow bike, but the altitude and course profile probably had a much bigger influence of the adjustment of -21:14. From what I’ve heard, the run was pretty flat, and that’s reflected in the marathon times and an adjustment of 2:25 which is pretty typical for the North American IM races. Overall, IM Lake Tahoe 2013 has an adjustment of -22:38. For now, it is the slowest long distance course, but that may change once we have another race with “warmer” conditions. Also, the race in Wales was even slower this year (adjustment of -30:15).

Male Race Results

Maik Twelsiek was in the first group after the swim and quickly took the lead on the bike. However, he was not able to shake Chris McDonald. Even though Maik had a 3:03 marathon (a faster than expected run for him), Chris won the race by posting a 2:59 marathon. Joe Gambles took the last place on the podium.

Female Race Results

The women’s race was even closer than the men’s race: The final, decisive move by Asa Lundström came within the last miles of the run when she passed Jeanne Collonge who was in the lead for the most part of the run. Cat Morrison was probably happy to finish on the podium in her comeback race.

Race Conditions

Based on a quick glance at last year’s results (when Almere was still an “independent” race), I expected a quick course. This turned out not to be the case: With an adjustment of 4:41, Almere was about as fast as New Zealand or the old IM Canada course.  There were not a lot of Pros racing (and quite a lot racing here for the first time as a Pro), so next year will give a better indication if 2013 was a typical race for Almere.

Update: Apparently the course changed significantly from 2012. I got some feedback that there was a lot of rain and wind. (Thanks to Dylan McNeice, Alistair Lang and Neil McLoughlin.) Some people also report both the bike and run to be long.

This is the first race on this course. One of the big questions is how much influence the altitude is going to have (Lake Tahoe is at about 6.000 feet and higher or 2000 meters). Alan Couzens has an interesting article on the impact of altitude, his best guess seems to be 10% (+/-5%). At about 9 hours, that would make Tahoe between 25 and 80 minutes slower than a race at sea level.

IM Lake Tahoe has 2000 KPR points for the winner. It has a total price purse of 75k$.

Male Race Participants

There are a number of athletes on the list that have recently raced: Joe has raced the 70.3 championship in Las Vegas, Maik has just won Wisconsin, Michael has placed 3rd in Wales, Thomas had a DNF in Wisconsin and was thinking of taking some more rest before Kona. The first version of the last was missing some athletes that I know wanted to race, they have now been added. (Thanks to Romain Guillaume for sending me an updated start list.) I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some more changes to the field in the days before the race.

Race Conditions

As usual, IM Wisconsin was relatively slow (adjustment of -0:25). The slowest leg this year was the swim (adjustment of -3:34), and I’ve heard a number of reports indicating a windy, choppy swim.

Male Race Results

Maik Twelsiek won the race with a performance that was typical for him: Close to the front on the swim, followed by a very strong bike (12 minutes faster than any other finisher). He was then able to hold on to the lead with a solid 3:06 run. He was followed by Daniel Bretscher (posting a good run) and Eliot Holtham (being almost an hour faster than expected).

Female Race Results

Whereas most of the top men were able to beat their expected times, a lot of the women struggled a bit. Jackie Arendt managed to post a good run (relative to her previous results) and win the race. She was followed by Beth Shutt (also with a solid run) and Malaika Homo who had to settle for third after the best bike leg and leading in T2.
