Challenge Roth 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

As usual, the Roth race was very quick. An adjustment of 19:41 is pretty much in line with the course rating of 18:10. The difference to “slow” years comes mainly from a quick bike ride (12:43 this year as compared to 5:13 from last year). Apparently, the good weather on race day helped to go quick without any impact on run times.

One comment to the results: Roth is one of the few races that does not have a “Pro” category. As I am focusing on Pro result, I have to figure out who’s a Pro by comparing names with athletes that I already have in my database. This means that I don’t include athletes that are racing Pro in a long distance race for the first time or that have recently changed names.  (Some examples: This year I am not including 8th place overall Roeland Smits – I don’t have any other professional results for him. Last year I have missed Julia Gajer as she recently changed her name from Julia Wagner.)

Male Race Results

After his disappointing finish in Cozumel (with a 4:30 run in order to validate his Kona slot), Dirk Bockel won in a convincing fashion by pulling away on the bike and then still posting an excellent 2:48 marathon. His 7:52 is the fastest 2013 performance, both is absolute and adjusted times. With such a great performance, last year’s winner, James Cunnama, had to be happy with second place. Timo Bracht wanted to challenge for the win, but after technical issues on the bike (apparently his rim got damaged) he was happy with running onto the podium. (Even if his 2:44 was close to his expected marathon time, it was still the second fastest run time.)

Female Race Results

On the women’s side, Carolin Steffen posted a very solid win with an 8:40 finish. Even if she still has to run a sub-3h marathon, she managed to put 6 minutes into 2nd place Yvonne van Vlerken (even if she didn’t quite run up to her potential). This leaves ample room for Kona speculation – who will be able to deliver her best performance in October? Julia Gajer again finished in sub-9h and on the podium – it will be interesting to see her race on a different long distance course from Roth.

KPR situation for end of July 2013 races

The interest into the first round of KPR cutoffs at the end of July is increasing. After having a look at the start lists for the last two races (Lake Placid and Switzerland on July 28th), here is an analysis of what the situation looks like and where I expect the cutoffs to occur.

Men

For the men, there are 40 July qualifiers. At the end of last year, I estimated the July cutoff to occur at 4.000 points.

There will be at least one extra spot with Crowie being an automatic qualifier. (Macca, the other past champion sits in #70 with 2.450. He gets a Kona spot, but doesn’t “move the line”.) It is not 100% clear how the 70.3 champion (Sebastian Kienle) is handled, but I assume that he also does not count against the number of July qualifiers. This means that the cutoff will probably occur at #42 – currently Chris Legh at 3.420 points.

For Lake Placid, these are the athletes close to qualifying:

  • Andy Potts: 5.850 points (but still has to validate)
  • Tim Van Berkel: 3.610 points
  • Ian Mikelson: 3.325 points
  • Andres Castillo: 3.280 points
I’m assuming that each of these athletes should be able to move to at least 3.800 points. (It would require Andres to finish in #5 or higher.)
A few of the athletes on the Switzerland start list should be safe already:
  • Petr Vabrousek: 5.520 points
  • Ronnie Schildknecht: 4.225 points
  • James Cunnama: 3.905 points (I don’t think he’s planning to race in Zurich so soon after Roth, it’s probably just a precaution in case he feels his Kona spot is in danger.)
As Switzerland is a P-2000 race, a few more athletes have a chance to get enough points:
  • Cyril Viennot: 3.380 points
  • Marko Albert: 3.235 points
  • Ben Cotter: 3.170 points
  • Mike Schifferle: 2.840 points
  • Michael Wetzel: 2.530 points
  • Simon Cochrane: 2.505 points
In order for Michael or Simon to move to 3.800 points, it would require a 4th place finish – a tall order. Mike would need a top 8 finish. This means that probably three athletes from Lake Placid and four athletes from Switzerland would move to 3.800 points or move. This would move the cutoff to the athlete currently ranked #35 – Marino Vanhoenacker with 3.720 points.
There are 10 more spots at the end of August. At the start of the year I estimated the August cutoff to occur at 4.400 points. With the July cutoff being a bit lower, the number of points required at the end of August will probably also be lower – probably 4.200 will be sufficient.

Women

For the women, there will be 28 qualifiers at the end of July. It will actually roll down to #31, as there are two automatic qualifiers that don’t count (Leanda and Rinnie) and Kelly Williamson (currently sitting on #25) is not interested in racing Kona this year. Right now, #31 is Sarah Piampiano with 4.530 points.

There are no athletes on the Lake Placid start list that is able to reach close to that number of points: The athlete with the most points is Jennie Hansen with 3.240 points, but Lake Placid only offers 1.000 points to the winner.

Switzerland is a P-2000 race, and there are a few athletes that should be able to make the necessary number of points:

  • Erica Csomor: 4.750 points, should be able to improve on that (provided she starts)
  • Charisa Wernick: 4.360 points
  • Sara Gross: 4.230 points
  • Rebecca Hoschke: 4.150 points

Each of these athletes should be able to make the top 8 which would give them at least 1000 points and move them well beyond 5.000 points. This means that the last athlete to qualify in July should move four spots to the athlete currently in #28, which is Amy Marsh with 4.900 points.

There are a few athletes in Switzerland with outside/theoretical chances of qualifying:

  • Stephanie Jones: 3.160 points
  • Regula Rohrbach: 2.800 points

However, if they want to have a chance of qualifying in June, they would have to win the race which seems quite unlikely.

Seven more athletes will qualify at the end of August. Typically, the number of points needed to qualify at the end of August was lower than at the end of July. At the start of the year, I was estimating this cutoff to occur at 4.000 points. As the July number should be about 400 points higher that what I estimated, the August number will probably move by a similar number – to about 4.400.

IM Germany 2013 – Analyzing Results

Race Conditions

IM Germany was very fast this year – both in absolute terms (sub-8 and sub-9 winners), but also in relative terms: An adjustment of 14:33 is the fastest since 2009. The swim was pretty normal, but the bike and the run were quicker than in the last years. It can probably be explained by the good weather conditions: The days before the race were pretty cool, then race day was nice and sunny, but not too hot. (In previous years, it was ofter either rainy, cold, or really hot.

New Race Results Format

I’ve slightly changed the result post format – in addition to the overall results compared to expectations, I’m now showing how the athlete performed in each of the legs:

  • a green time indicates a faster race than expected (for the swim more than about 90 seconds quicker, for the bike and the run more than three minutes quicker)
  • a black time indicates a time pretty much as expected
  • a red time indicates a slower time than expected.
  • For the overall time I’m also coloring the athlete’s name and show the difference to the expected time in the last column.
Please let me know if this is helpful or if you’d like me to display more or different information!

Challenge Roth 2013 – Predictions

This is an updated version of the start list in my 2013 Summer Rating Report (you can download your free copy here). If you want to make your own Roth predictions, check out IM-Betting.com for a chance to win some cool prizes!

Challenge Roth is one of the oldest Ironman-distance in Europe. It used to be a WTC race, but has been “independent” since the early 2000s, building a solid brand under the “Challenge” label. The race itself is quite large (only possible by a wave start system) and is on a course than can be very quick: Usually you have to go sub-8 (for the men) and sub-9 (for the women) if you want to win the race.

Winning Odds

Male Race Participants

The odds probably show a better picture of who the “real” (statistical) contenders are – there are a few athletes that have just completed one or two IM-distance races and are pretty hard to predict. As last year, I’m expecting a close race between Timo and James, maybe with a few surprises mixed in:

  • James Cunnama: 29% (2-1)
  • Timo Bracht: 28% (3-1)
  • Nils Frommhold: 13% (7-1)
  • Dirk Bockel: 12% (7-1)
  • Cameron Brown: 11% (8-1)
  • Dylan McNeice: 5% (20-1)

Female Race Participants

The winnng odds favor Xena:

  • Caroline Steffen: 39% (2-1)
  • Sonja Tajsich: 27% (3-1)
  • Yvonne Van Vlerken: 27% (3-1)
  • Joanna Lawn: 3% (37-1)
  • Julia Gajer: 2% (51-1)
However, it’s possible that this year Caroline will try to focus mainly on Kona and might not be in her top form in Frankfurt, so Yvonne may challenge her for the win (as she did in Melbourne). Also, Sonja would love to be the next German winner in Roth. (I think the last one was Nicole Leder in the early 2000s.)

Ironman Germany 2013 – How the race may unfold

This is an updated version of the start list in my 2013 Summer Rating Report (you can download your free copy here). If you want to make your own predictions on the Frankfurt race, check out IM-Betting.com for a chance to win some cool prizes!

Men’s Race

Here’s how the men’s race in Frankfurt could unfold:

2013Men

With such a big and strong field, things could get quite crowded in Frankfurt:

  • Almost the full men’s field will be within 10 minutes of the leader (and I’m not even showing the full Pro field in this graph). The best-rated swimmer is David Dellow, he’ll probably lead the race until about the half way mark.
  • The two “über bikers” Marino and Sebastian (if he managed to get in  decent shape for the race) will move through the field and try to take control of the race on the bike. Eneko and David will try to limit the difference, as will Andi Böcherer, another great biker.
  • Under normal circumstances, Marino should be able to defend his title. However, Eneko has been in great form this year and might try to challenge him (as he did in Melbourne). It will also be interesting to see if Ivan Rana (with his great running capabilities) manages to get into the mix. (It’ll probably depend on whether he’ll be able to step up on the bike to stay close to the front.)
  • Sebi is probably not on his best form, so I can’t see him staying close to Marino and Eneko. David Dellow is a great runner, but if he’s smart he’ll be happy to just punch his Kona ticket and try to fully build for October. As usual, Pete Jacobs will save his best performance for Kona.
  • None of the other athletes will be able to vastly improve their positions after the bike, instead I see a group of 10+ athletes coming off the bike ten to fifteen minutes back. These will try to duke it out for the last money spots and some great KPR points.

Women’s Race

The question in the women’s race will be if anyone will be able to challenge Jodie Swallow:

2013Women

  • Jodie has the best rating coming into the race, and she could lead the race from start to finish. (I fiddled a bit with her data, making her bike a bit slower but her run a bit faster than her single race would indicate. In IM South Africa she was leading by a wide margin after the bike but was overtaken on the run when she ran into problems.) It’s tricky to predict her performance after just a single IM, but she’s a very experienced racer and I expect her to race a bit smarter in Frankfurt than in South Africa.
  • Behind Jodie, there will be a group of athletes a few minutes behind her after the swim. From these, Camilla Pedersen and Anja Beranek are probably the only ones that can stay in the same ZIP code as Jodie. However, Camilla and Anja would need a fantastic run to be able to make it to the front.
  • Things will get a lot more interesting on the run. The strongest runners appear to be Elizabeth Lyles and Kristin Moeller. However, it would take an exceptional performance from any of these athletes to challenge Jodie for the win. But watch out if any of them is “only” about 15 minutes behind Jodie at the start of the run.
