New Episode of IM-Predictions podcast: Interviews with Trevor Wurtele and Marko Albert

For the latest episode of the IM-Predictions podcast I’ve had the chance to talk with two great interview partners:

  • Trevor Wurtele took some time to chat about Team Wurtele and the chances of his wife Heather for IM Coeur d’Alene.
  • I’ve asked Marko Albert about the upcoming IM Austria and his general goals as a triathlete.
I think it’s a great listen, both in preparation for the races on June 29th, and about these interesting athletes in general.

Male Race Participants

As usual, IM Germany has a stellar field. Based on previous results, Freddie Van Lierde is my favorite. However, the race will be very interesting with the mix of experienced athletes probably focused more on Kona (Freddie, Sebastian Kienle), athletes moving up to the full distance (Jan Frodeno), athletes coming back from not so good results (Andreas Raelert, Ronnie Schildknecht, Jens Petersen-Bach) and those probably fully focused on Frankfurt (Jan Raphael and most of the other Germans). Almost impossible to predict what is going to happen!

  • Frederik Van Lierde: 45% (1-1)
  • Andreas Raelert: 27% (3-1)
  • Ronnie Schildknecht: 12% (8-1)
  • Sebastian Kienle: 8% (11-1)
  • Clemente Alonso-McKernan: 5% (19-1)
  • Jan Raphael: 3% (29-1)

Female Race Participants

The female race also has an amazing depth of talent, but is probably a bit easier to foresee than the men’s. Mary Beth Ellis and Jodie Swallow are always solid and at the front of the race. Last year’s winner Camilla Pedersen is back to defend her title – she’s had a tumultuous year with a bike crash, induced coma, an amazing recovery and successful 70.3 races in the spring. It’s hard to say what she’ll be able to do over the full distance. Then there are Eva Wutti (who needs a good result after a DNF in Texas), and a lot of German (Sonja Tajsich, Kristin Möller) and international athletes (Elizabeth Lyles, Gina Crawford). There are a few athletes on the list that are probably DNS – Annabel Luxford is injured, and Simone Braendli and Cait Snow have entered Frankfurt only as a back-up option if their primary IMs in Austria and France don’t go so well.

  • Eva Wutti: 29% (2-1)
  • Mary Beth Ellis: 24% (3-1)
  • Camilla Pedersen: 15% (6-1)
  • Jodie Swallow: 8% (11-1)
  • Sonja Tajsich: 7% (13-1)
  • Caitlin Snow: 6% (15-1)
  • Elizabeth Lyles: 3% (34-1)
  • Gina Crawford: 3% (39-1)
  • Kristin Moeller: 2% (57-1)

Challenge Atlantic City 2014 (June 29th) – Predictions

Update (June 22nd): Jessie Donavan tweeted that she is not racing.

Update (June 24th): April Gellatly, Amy Javens and Kathryn Thomas are still on the start list but are rumored not to be starting. Anna Cleaver is no longer on the list.

This is the first race on this course, therefore we don’t have previous winners, a course rating or expected finishing times.

Chris McCormack hasn’t won an Ironman since Cairns 2011. He is a Challenge ambassador, so he’ll probably want to leave a good impression here. Fredrik Croneborg might be considered the front runner, Thomas Gerlach is a late addition to the start list with good chances for a pay day.

  • Fredrik Croneborg: 22% (4-1)
  • Thomas Gerlach: 8% (12-1)

Female Race Participants

The race looks to be a two horse race between Carrie Lester and Jessie Donavan. I’m a bit surprised to see Jessie on the start list – my guess was that she is focused on her Kona build.  Jessie has tweeted that she won’t be racing. Closest to these two is Anna Cleaver, probably better known under her maiden name Anna Ross who is coming back from foot surgery.  (I mixed up the Anna’s here .. Anna Cleaver finished the shortened IM Melbourne in 2013, and is different from Anna Russell nee Ross. Thanks to Dana for pointing out my error.)

  • Carrie Lester: 46% (1-1)
  • Jessie Donavan: 45% (1-1)
  • Anna Cleaver: 5% (19-1)
  • April Gellatly: 2% (26-1)
  • Jacqui Gordon: 2% (42-1)

Winning Odds

Male Race Participants

Ben Hoffman is back to defend his 2013 title, but he faces Andy Potts who remains unbeaten in an Ironman outside of Kona. Victor Zyemtsev (always with a great run) and the „German Cycling Machine“ Maik Twelsiek would love to be able to mix things up.

  • Ben Hoffman: 49% (1-1)
  • Andy Potts: 23% (3-1)
  • Victor Zyemtsev: 16% (5-1)
  • Maik Twelsiek: 8% (11-1)
  • Pedro Gomes: 2% (48-1)

Female Race Participants

The „Ws” Heather Wurtele and Kelly Williamson are the favorites on the female side. Jennie Hansen would love to get back to her summer 2013 level when she won in Lake Placid. Originally Heather Jackson was planning on racing CdA, but she is not on the start list.

  • Heather Wurtele: 42% (1-1)
  • Kelly Williamson: 40% (1-1)
  • Jennie Hansen: 13% (7-1)
  • Stephanie Jones: 4% (22-1)

Ironman France 2014 (June 29th) – Predictions

Update (June 22nd):  I’ve added Bertrand Billard and Jeanne Collonge to the start list – apparently they were added relatively late. (Thanks to Nicolas for pointing out that they were missing.)

Winning Odds

Male Race Participants

Bart Aernouts will try to finally win in France – last year even a 2:37 marathon was not enough to beat Frederik Van Lierde. With Victor Del Corral he faces another 2:37 runner, and with Tyler Butterfield and Jeremy Juriewicz at least two more athletes looking for their an Ironman win.

  • Bart Aernouts: 37% (2-1)
  • Victor Del Corral: 23% (3-1)
  • Jeremy Jurkiewicz: 19% (4-1)
  • Tyler Butterfield: 9% (10-1)
  • Mathias Hecht: 6% (16-1)
  • Markus Thomschke: 2% (44-1)
  • Trevor Delsaut: 2% (65-1)

Female Race Participants

After not qualifying for the Commonwealth Games, Leanda Cave moved up her validation plans (originally she wanted to do Sweden), she faces another speedy runner with Caitlin Snow. The field is not too deep, with Tine Deckers and Lisa Roberts (Ribes) being the main contenders for a podium spot. (However, the field is an improvement over last year with only five female Pro starters.)

  • Leanda Cave: 36% (2-1)
  • Tine Deckers: 31% (2-1)
  • Caitlin Snow: 27% (3-1)
  • Lisa Roberts: 4% (22-1)
