Race Conditions

Coeur d’Alene is usually a medium-fast course, with a course rating of 3:49 a bit slower than IM France (7:53). This year, however, conditions in CdA were pretty good (adjustment of 5:52), even better than this year’s IM France (adjustment of 4:35).

Male Results

A few late entries to the race (notably Craig Alexander and Tom Evans) made the race at the top a lot more interesting. Crowie ticked the box of validating his Kona spot with an IM race outside of Kona in a convincing fashion. In a pretty close race Maik Twelsiek pushed him to a CdA course record:

Even though Crowie won this race, he was a bit slower than his rating predicted, and as consequence slipped to forth spot in the overall ratings. (I’ll update the TOP10 ratings page after IM Austria, when new 3rd Marino Vanhoenacker  has his next race.

Maik Twelsiek continued to improve his rating, he has two second spots this year, both times being passed pretty late in the run, but holding on for second just a few minutes behind first place. He still has to post his first sub-3h marathon, I’m looking forward to Kona – if he manages to crack 3 hours there he’ll be a safe bet for a top 10 finish there.

Craig and Maik were way in front of everyone else, Tom Evans came in third almost half an hour back, and he was more than 10 minutes clear of forth spot.

Female Results

On the female side, we had another athlete “ticking the box”: Julie Dibens finished her second Ironman, secured her Kona spot and won in convincing fashion:

Julie could afford to walk a bit on the run (she twittered that she officially know what a bonk feels like now) and still was more than 10 minutes ahead of Caitlin Snow. With her second IM result, Julie is also eligible for the top 10 ratings and comes in 3rd place for now (after Chrissie and Rinnie). As usual, IM Hawaii is shaping up to be a very interesting field!

Ironman race season in Europe has really started! The first race on the “mainland” was IM France, and in the next weeks Austria, Switzerland and Germany are going to follow (predictions for these races are going to be up soon). This post looks at the results of IM France.

Race Conditions

The conditions in France seem to have been quite hard, I’ve only got an adjustment of 4:35, leading to a new course rating of 7:53 – i.e. this year’s race was 3 1/2 minutes slower than what is typical for France.

Male Results

Five-time winner Marcel Zamora was not able to defend his title, instead Frederik van Lierde continued his great season, improved on his expected time and won quite convincingly:

Zamora was also beaten by Francois Chabaud (who managed to put another good race together after a number of not-so-good results), but he was able to come in in front of pre-race favorite Paul Amey.

Even though Silvia came in a little bit slower than was to be expected from her great IM Florida time and 2nd place Martina Dogana and 3rd place Britta Martin managed to go faster than their ratings predicted (by 5 and 6 minutes respectively), Silvia won by more than 10 minutes.

Previous Results

Coeur d’Alene, with a course rating of 4:12, is just a few minutes quicker than IM Hawaii (-0:24) and about as fast as IM Australia (4:24).

Last year’s race was won by Andy Potts (8:24) and Linsey Corbin (9:17).

He has to be called the clear favorite and the only “almost rock star” in the race, but I’m sure that one of the other athletes will try to give him a good run for the money.

Update (6/22): Literally within minutes of me posting my predictions, Crowie announced on his blog that he will also race CdA. If he is properly recovered from his injury, that makes him the favorite for the race. One other question is if he’s racing just to finish and secure his Kona spot, or i he is going to go all out for another IM win. If he’s on form, I’m predicting an 8:12 for him (more in the updated details post).

“Dibs” just has one Ironman race so far (last year’s third place in IM Hawaii), and if she can even remotely repeat her Kona performance, she should win just as convincingly as Maik on the male side. Behind her we have 4 to 6 contenders for a podium spot – depending if you want to count Ali Fitch (with her comeback race after a prolonged injury) and Desiree Ficker (apparently trying to get back into Triathlon, but sometimes a hit and miss athlete).

As you can see in the details, I have just one result Silvia Felt in my database (a 9:24 and 4th place from this year’s IM South Africa) – I wonder if she’ll be able to put in another performance at this level. She is followed by a number of established athletes, and I would think that everyone up to #8 has a realistic chance of winning the race or at least being in the mix.
